Door panel clipping
Removed the Fr. RH door panel to replace the 'carrier' and as I look at the back of the panel, it looks like at least some of the round push in clips are actually attached to the holes in fixings that are on a small curved plastic base (about 2" sq.) that is glued to the back of the panel, rather than the holes being actually part of the door panel itself. Well that's BMW I guess, but the problem is that one of these small mountings has come off the door panel and so cannot be used 'as is'. Therefore now either the panel will be loose at the front where that clip used to be, or, I need to glue this mounting back onto the door panel.
I'm guessing I'm not the first to experience this, so what is the recommended glue to use to firmly re-attach the mounting to the door panel. BMW seemed to use a fairly rigid yellow glue. Any idea what that is? Can it be obtained? Otherwise, what else? It has to be strong and withstand any pulling on the panel to undo the clip when the panel has to be removed. What's the best glue to use? |
Looking at the back of the panel it appears that ALL the fixing clips are mounted in these glued-on mountings. So someone must have figured the best glue to use to re-attach them.

I use 3M all weather adhesive as glue, available at hardware stores. Follow instructions, but basically apply the adhesive, wait about 1h before installing everything back.

3M red double-sided body tape. Less chance of mess if you are anything like me.

It is what they use for the body moldings on most vehicles. I saw it used first on the side molding of our Ford Explorer Limited to reattach the plastic after a door was scratched and resprayed. It was still attached 10 years later when we sold the vehicle.
You can pick it up on fleabay. |
I use permatex silicon gasket maker. Takes awhile to set up (at least 24 hours). But has done the trick so far on door panels for me.
