I did the VANOS seal replacement on mine. Noticed no difference in power or fuel mileage. It was worth doing, the seals were hard and probably not working very well and I needed to replace the valve cover gasket. I have an M54. Folks with the V8 that have done it said they didn't get anything out of the VANOS seal change either, BUT when they replaced the VANOS solenoids it made a huge difference. I haven't changed the solenoids on mine yet, so I can't say.

I'm driving a friend's 2006 X5 3.0 and it has way more pep than mine. He did the Beisan VANOS thing on it. Aside from having 120,000km less, maybe that's all.

So...

Holes 1,2,3,5 and 6 come up to about 120 on the first stroke, then 10-20/stroke until max (around 8 strokes).

Hole 4 starts at 40 on the first stroke, then comes up 10-20 per stroke. Multiple tests showed a steady rise in max number.

Plug 4 is wet. Not sure if it's oil or coolant. Sample is too small to tell but I'll try fire (if it burns it's oil).
