Air con stopped working yesterday is there anyway i can check the compressor before I go spending money any help much appreciated.

Not really other than checking to see if it engages and maybe turning it by hand (engine off) to check how it feels.

check your aux fan for operation. if it doesnt work, the pressures can get too high and it will shut the compressor off.

Stephen, what are the symptoms of the A/C failure? Does blower work, but air not cool? List more detail of the problems going on with it to try to narrow it down. You can disconnect the elec plug, going into the refrigerant pipe, on passenger side of your X to test for Aux fan operation(It should turn ON when plug disconnected). Look at front of the compressor to see if magnetic clutch is engaging/disengaging. Do you or a friend have gauges to look at hi/low side pressures?......It seems daunting, but is really quite simple. Reply with some more indepth info and I will try to help you further. I have exact same model/year X as you. I just rebuilt mine with help of a mechanic friend and learned a lot about how they operate.
