My steering column does not extend. Moves up and down fine. I’m hoping there’s a computer setting turned off? Anything else is hideously expensive. Advice would be appreciated. Thanks Mike |

If nothing worked It would be the brain in the controller for the seat. That one aspect works it's more likely hardware = pricy fix.
Do your seat memory positions still work? We bought my wife's x5 with defective seat controller board and no memory or steering adjustment until aboit a month ago when I finally put in the replacement controller and all is good. It's not married to the car : if you have a good friend with e53 you could swap boards in under an hour both ways to confirm (you could also one last time move wheel to the distance you want) There is a very good chance it's that board. I paid like $30 for mine from an xoutpost member. Just noticed your location. I go to Chicago regularly it's possible I could do that test if you don't resolve quickly. |
Thanks Andrew
I just so happen to have another E53 in my stable. Where’s that board located? Never tried the memory settings on the 02. Are you saying that if the memory settings work don’t figure on it being the board? |

Exactly what I'm saying.
It's 10 minutes to remove the board. T20 in the back the rest are just hidden clips. Try to find YouTube video. The board is combined with the same module holding the seat switches If memory doesn't work on the seat then for sure the board is shot. The board also apparently controls the steering wheel position so if the wheel controller is not responding it's the go-to problem. If you hear motor whirr and it doesn't move then it's likely a broken gear. |
Thanks again
I’ll givr it a shot |
Here's a topology chart that visualizes the info that has already been given. Steering wheel column movement is a command produced by the PM-SM (driver's seat module) and delivered over the K-bus (on the e53) or over the P-bus on the e38 & e39:

Thank you, now if I could only figure out the CID computer !
About as intuitive as hitting yourself in the forehead with a baseball bat ! Thanks Mike |
Always thought it odd that my 02 has an earlier model (like my 735) trip computer than my 01! Just getting fuel consumption is pedantic.
