n62 has lite rattle...

Hello folks..

Hoping i can get some guidance/direction on what this noise could possibly be or causing it..

I have a n62 with 124K and i have this rattle that only shows up while driving. To paint a better picture, it usually happens while i am coasting and then attempt to give it throttle.. at light throttle I can hear the rattle, but I soon as I give it more throttle and then it goes away as if whatever was rattling has become tighter..

COuld it be any of the following:

  • Vanos
  • Timing Tensioner
  • Timing Guides
  • anything i missed (lol)

any help is gratefully appreciated!

Get a video of it and see if you can narrow it down, have you replaced the tensioner?

That'll be a bit tough but I will see if I can manage..

I haven't.. I meant to indicate that in my initial post. from my quick and dirty research, I only found one tensioner and its on the passenger side, is this correct? or are there two, one passenger side and one drivers side?

lastly, is there a write up? Is it pretty involved?

If it's anything like the M62 which is the previous gen engine it should be on the passenger side and only take about 15 minutes to replace but you'll have to remove the intake box.

EDIT: it's actually in an easier location, the video below should clarify.

Read some of the comments in the video... someone mentioned the rattling noise was caused by the water pump. You should still change the tensioner though.

There are two actually, one per side. the drivers side is at the top and the passenger is underneath the airbox area.

the waterpump rattle was a constant which the op replaced the water pump pulley and was all set.. mine appears with on and off lite throttle.

Here's a longshot: My '75 '02 would do this after I hopped up the jets in the Weber and didn't add octane boost. Are you using premium fuel? Maybe run some additive through it?

No one likes this snake oil advice, and I get that. But I've heard that noise from the head from my E39, E46, and E53 when it needs a lil more fuel and a little less corn.
