I bought an E 53 2002 with 68K. Thought I had a winner here, not so, it dies and won’t pickup the throttle so it gets towed. Sodtomes it throws a code but I’m sitting here now with no code and no go. Sometimes it will start fine after sitting. I’m baffled and so is my mechanic. Did I get an off shore unit or something wired?
Any help woul be appreciated

Can you hear Fuel pump priming?

In a noisy location. Wants to idle for a minute and dies. Could a fuel pump be intermittent ?

Yes fuel pump can be intermittent. I would check that first if you are getting any fuel pressure.

Long shot, but starting and not starting randomly can be the ignition barrel, other people here have reported similar symptoms.


It is the electronic bit that fits behind the part where the key goes into.


Not too expensive and pretty easy to change yourself.

I had a similar issue on the road in Boise, ID (across the country from home). The X5 started to stumble at Interstate speeds, the dash lit up, and then the motor would quit. While I waited for a tow, I tried to start it again and it fired! I went through this for about 5 times as I was ~80 miles from a mechanic I'd met out that way before.

He was initially baffled as well, but found it was a part he needed to order for the next day. It was somewhat rare for it to fail he said. If this sounds like your trouble, I can look for the part #. It was 2 or 3 years ago.

Well, that was easy... I found the post. The first thought for a failed part was called an IVM and we did have codes, evidently. I do not *know* if it's only on N62s. The thing that got me on the road was the CPS. Hope it's not a waste of your time:
