perishing rubbers

Ok recent issues with wifes 2002 e46 have revealed really sub par plastics and rubbers, be these the ineternal panels , rubber seals about headlamps and rubber seal that runs along width of windshield just about the wipers...all we have is heat out here...

The X has the same rubbers it seems in the same places, is the only way to preserve the rubber parts to keep the car out of the intense sun? and is there any new tech type of sealant that can easily be used to recty the seals that have weathered away...?

Literally just dried and crumbled away on many areas of e46 , shame totally rubbish compared to a clapped out old mazda we also have around that is solid as a rock in terms of its rubber seals etc....

I can't say if one brand is better than the other but we're talking 14 years of rubber. Dry rot is dry rot...no way around that ?

Find some treatment that blocks UV. Heat is nothing. The rubber parts in the motor are subjected to heat over 100° more than the outside rubber stuff..

Ok thanks to all see if i can source some of that 303 stuff out here,...entirely understand that rubber perishes but only reason I mentioned clapped out old Mazda was that it is a 1994 car all rubbers nearly good as new...could be bmw was using a bad supplier of rubber at the time, who knows, the seals are pants

Do you use this product?
to what do you apply it on your X?

Looks like spray on wipe off.

In all honesty, I utilize said/similar products but I treat them more on a looks-detailing aspect. Not for mitigation of degradation.

andrewwynn 08-29-2018 11:13 AM

They are one in the same. They only look bad when they degrade
