160,000 miles and the old girl is starting to complain. I have a knock in the right front end that I can't identify so far. Changed the axle assembly but no love, noise still there when backing out of the garage. One loud knock and then silent. Wheels turned as I drive away and 2 knocks and then silent again until turning sharp in parking lots. I had changed both lower arms before the sound started occurring so I double checked my work and nothing was left loose.

Today for no reason the dreaded 4x4 light and amber brake light lit up followed by the trans failsafe mode. Shut everything down and restarted it and all the lights went out and all good again.

I have also been fighting a P0172 and P0175 system too rich left and right bank so I am doing a smoke test in the morning to see if an intake leak is causing those codes.

I unbelievably pamper both my BMWs but the X seems to want a little attention lately... https://www.e46fanatics.com/forum/im...s/banghead.gif

:iagree:

That was my first thought too - she's looking pretty good for an old lady....

The thump/clunk sounds like either the top strut mount or possibly the spring seat. Get that noise in VW Golfs all the time - hard to track down.

Do you know what the short term and long term fuel for each bank?

If I had to guess the MAF is dirty. This will not allow the MAF to measure the correct amount of air entering the engine. So with an incorrect of air entering the engine, the computer is compensating for the air-fuel ratio by adding fuel to the mixture, but the 02 sensor sees a different story so it is throwing up those codes.

If you have a scanner or software that can read real-time data you can see what the grams per second of air are being reported by the MAF.

Yes, I have OBD Fusion and Torque Pro as well as INPA and BMW Scanner 1.4. The CEL came on on my 2500 mile family road trip and cleared it and it didn't come back on for 1500 miles until yesterday. The smoke test this morning showed a slight leak at the CCV itself but I mean very slight.

I will get out there and see what the MAF g/s flow is and report back.

If the MAF is over reporting, FCP Euro has the Siemens/VDO MAF for $143 or a Genuine BMW for $385. Any suggestions?

Joe, I have siemens in my X and e46 and no complains.

The knock, could that be a wheel bearing?

I lived with a knock for over a year that sounds like this. I even took it in a couple times. By the 3rd time, they took more time to replicate and find the noise. It was a loose tie rod. :dunno:

Inner or outer end? In my experience the inners are much tougher to isolate, but do happen.
