I think the bigger challenge will be getting BMW Scanner to communicate with a USB port. That’s where I got stymied.

I'm good there.

It's easy but I'd be happy to help. You need BMW Scanner 1.4 and a laptop If you have it follow these instructions.

I upgraded my E46 LCM for triple blink and brake force display. Took about 15 minutes.

PASoft LCM Coding v1.1.zip

Sweet. I'll try this when I get home.
Thank you.

What’s the secret? I see the scanner in hardware manager with yellow triangle. But it won’t talk to USB port.

I found I could not run the hardware for BMW Scanner on the same physical machine as the other BMW software/hardware (INPA/DIS/NCS etc.). The driver for BMW Scanner clashed with the driver for the FTDI FT232 chipset used by the BMW software cable (KK USB). One overwrote the other...

My solution was to use another machine - a Windows XP virtual machine on a MacBook Pro as it happens. So I have an IBM ThinkPad running XP with INPA/DIS/NCS etc., a MacBook Pro running VMWare Fusion hosting XP with BMW Scanner and a Toshiba R500 running VCDS-Lite (with a KKL 409.1 cable for Volkswagen!). Quite the collection... ;)

My guess would be the incorrect drivers for the laptop but I have seen faulty Chinese clones coming over here. I have BMW Tools and BMW Scanner running on the same machine. Tell us what OS you are using and remember, when you load the drivers the first time, you must be plugged into the car. The OBDII port powers the dongle to load the drivers, not just the PC.

Dunno. Just got an old ass laptop that run windows XP.
I used it for Guzidiag, technoreseaech diagnostic, INPA and PA soft.
Runs all of them no problem.

Oh, I see. I didn’t try working with drivers while plugged into the car. It’s cold out there. I’ll enjoy having a generally working LCM for now, and maybe sort out the details down the road.

The native drivers for BMW Scanner 1.4 are for Win XP. If you are running Win 7 or later you need the FTDI drivers.

I have tried from XP through Win 10 on multiple machines. I did spend the most time on the XP machine, and it makes sense it may conflict with the existing NCS Expert and INPA installation. We ran into that when my son updated some stuff to be able to communicate with his E90 and I lost the ability to talk to my E53. It took me well over a year to get that sorted out and configured to talk to the E53 again.

All BMW Scanner will do is tell me to connect the scanner (even though it is) and to install the drivers. It does not indicate what the driver name is, where I may find such drivers, nor “where” to install them. All my USB ports show no flags or issues and report happy. The “BMW Scanner” shows as a device in device manager with a yellow triangle and it says no drivers are installed for that device. But again, I don’t know what it wants nor where to find whatever it wants.

We had decided to junk the E53 upon the next fault or repair as I’ve more than gotten my money from it over the past 10 or 12 pretty much trouble free years, even including the $700 or so I spent rebuilding the trans over 8 years ago in my garage when that failed. But getting an LCM for $100 seemed reasonable and so far it’s been plug and play. That’s why I don’t care about a tamper light. Back to using and normal maint as usual, but if something more than maybe a few hundred dollars fails, we’ll junk or give it away and I’ll buy myself a new car and move on.
