Transfer case fault code
 

Anyone one run into this fault code?

What car? LCI with ATC500 transfer case - meaning xDrive?

First guess - worn actuator gear. Easy to remove and check and if it's worn, rotate it 180Deg. until you get a replacement - or just leave it like that.

If the gear is ok, it's likely to be the motor itself...

*edit* Here's a DIY video re. the gear - ignore the bit about removing the motor from the actuator, as this is not required to inspect or replace the gear.

Replaced the gear and resistor on motor and bench tested the motor and it spun?

I guess you have another thread on here somewhere about that? Sorry, I missed it.. Best to keep a single thread per problem! :-)

So why did you replace the classification resistor? These resistors are chosen in the factory to match the particular transfer case characteristics. Each transfer case has a specific classification resistor matched to it - you can't just buy any old resistor and fit it and expect it to work...

So did this new code appear right after replacing the classification resistor and gear? If so, you may still be able to sort this by running the actuator calibration routine in GT1/DIS/ISTA etc. - not sure. :dunno:

Any other symptoms? Lights on the dash etc.? Is the xDrive working or is this error disabling it?

So did the transfer case ever work properly after this work and it was re-installed or is this issue part of that same work...?

I saw you mention that in another thread too - you were chasing the steering angle sensor then. Was that ever resolved? :dunno:

Still not working from before

So to summarise...

You had the dash light trifecta.

You suspected the steering angle sensor was causing this but have since found it isn't?

You found the transfer case actuator gear was worn and replaced it, also confirming the motor was ok? And changing the classification resistor.

Now the transfer case is throwing a new code and you still have the trifecta lights?

Hmm... Seems like it was a simple actuator gear failure to start with but clearly not now.

Maybe put the old classification resistor back in.

Might also pay to check that when running the actuator motor off the car that you haven't driven the gears to some odd position that the car cannot recover from- i.e the car wants to start with clockwise rotation during the startup calibration routine but you have driven the gears to the far end of the available clockwise rotation. Not sure here - haven't played with mine off the car.

That about sums it up! It always had the transfer case fault, Rebuilt it, lights still on, then found the steering angle sensor code fix that now that codes gone. Same transfer case code remains! And the saga continues, going to throw a new complete motor in it and pray that’s it!!!
