Judders / Jerk at stop

Hi,

I get judders sometimes when going uphill under certain RPM's. It's like the car wants more gas. Also when coming to a stop it jerks forward like someone has hit from behind. Note this seems to happen more frequent the warmer the car gets. Finally the rev counter seems to be sporadic and jumps up and down at certain speeds usually around 40-50mph.

All of this does not seem to happen in sport mode, or is at least not noticable.

Anyone have any pointers?

This sounds like classic e53 trans misbehavior. Either the solenoids have issues or something else in the trans. Especially if it doesn't happen with manually shifting or in sport mode. Pretty common unfortunately.

Are you getting any stored errors for the trans? Or any other modules?

Thanks for the reply crystalworks.

Not checked for errors as I don't have a scanner. But no errors appear on the cluster.

Do you think replacing the trans fluid and filter might help? It hasn't been done in my ownership. I bought it at 107k miles and now its at 115k miles.

If so could you advise of what fluid to get? Thanks.

I would have it scanned for BMW specific trouble codes before proceeding. Any route you take with the trans will range from a $400 trans fluid/filter service all the way up to a $3000 trans replacement and anything in between. I'll be doing the solenoid replacement service from ZF on my 4.8is because of rough shifting. Mine exhibits the being rear ended symptom when you attempt to california roll a stop. You must come to a complete stop and allow the trans to shift down to 1st or it will drop down violently.

I have noticed if i turn the AC on, the jerk at stop does not happen due to revs being higher.

is there a scanner you can recommend that would not break the bank?

NT-500 by Foxwell is great to carry in the car although everyone seems to love inpa or ista-d (can't get it here easily) so I don't know.

Less than $200 USD for the Foxwell
