Has anyone here been game enough to cut a hole in their dash?? :yikes:

nikinas 11-29-2018 02:02 AM

I would love something like this, but it seems like it is only for NAV equipped cars?

My current setup is tablet in a magnetic mount in the same spot:

Always thought that was cool... but no, didn't have the balls to do it. Seems it would do a lot to fix the glare problem that units mounted in the factory location do.

I ended up going with the new 10" in dash Android units that were recently released. Wife said I can not touch my way overkill stereo install though until all of the maintenance and to-dos were done. Oh, and until the parts truck is out of the garage. :D

mr_robot 11-29-2018 09:40 AM

You have to cut the dash to install this. But it's cool none the less.

You also end up losing the cup holders add the iDrive style controller gets installed there but since it's touch screen it might be optional.

I like that tablet idea, got pictures of how it's mounted?

KEWL pic Nikinas. Is the magnet strong enough even on a semi hard stop ?

donmayor 11-29-2018 01:38 PM

my mind is blown... do you have to remove the dash to accomplish this. do you have a write up?

Something like this I would assume.

This isn't the install you are thinking of, mr_robot - this is a Seicane aftermarket display, not the installation of the later OEM system.

No changes to the lower console at all.

I'm not advocating it - I know very little about it - just thought it worth sharing as I'd not seen this before.

I wouldn't be nervous at all cutting a 12" hole into the top of my dash... Nope, not at all, no way... :pullhair:

I have not kept up with the times on the available upgrade options that are PNP these days.

12 Years ago, with the Alpine F1 Processor on the top console, and all sorts of goodies in the trunk, Focal BE 3 ways, with T/MR custom A Pillared, I thought I was the baddest m'er on the block. But man, these new PNP offerings are just as Stealth and Sweet !

 I couldn't do it either. I think it looks kinda cool I think but no way I could get myself to do it.

jsoto 12-03-2018 02:48 PM

Renderings may be just that renderings. screen resolution looks nice tho

mr_robot 12-03-2018 04:36 PM

This also retains the mk4 and my ocd would kill me having two radios, two navis, double of everything.

LOL, or put another aftermarket head unit in and enjoy a huge nav screen and watch youtube, movie, etc on the lower screen. :D J/K of course, but it's a funny thought.

That's what I would do if I did that. I would have the android app going on the lower screen showing mpg, trip info and the top one showing nav :)

mr_robot 12-03-2018 09:27 PM

I think this unit needs to retain the factory nav to work unless I’m wrong as it tees off the oem nav.

I initially thought of putting this screen on the dash and putting the business cd on the bottom.

I have a spare dashboard so was willing to risk it.

But also don’t know if business cd can be retrofitted in place of factory nav as well.

It is mounted using a magentic dash mount. I bought the following locally as I wanted to get it installed the same day: https://www.scosche.com/magicmount-pro-dash

Here is a picture of the mount installed:

I routed the cable to the rear cigarette socket along to the center console using stick on cable managers

I haven't tested it yet, but using the above mount the tablet is sitting on the air vent and being pulled against the lip on the top edge. It does not move or shake at all during normal driving, including going over bumps.

mr_robot 12-13-2018 10:22 PM

I was referring to the Avin unit.

I believe that one in the OP is a Seicane.

mr_robot 12-13-2018 10:44 PM

But Avin unit is the same, involves cutting up the dash.

I think it could of been designed without the need of hacking up the dash.

I like the idea and the look for sure but not doing that lol

Meh, if I really liked it... I'd hack up the dash. ;)

jsoto 12-14-2018 01:02 AM

But what happens when the electronics go bad and you can't find a suitable replacement. I guess it could be a kewl built in tissue box dispenser :nanana:

crystalworks 12-14-2018 01:05 AM

That would suck. You buy a new dash I guess? They're like $100-200. Replacing wouldn't be fun at all though.
