Left side rear. TCU (Telematics Control Unit) module with tag is the lower unit, antenna is the top unit. Last 5 of the VIN is incorrect. There will be a 4 digit Bluetooth passkey code.

If you have the bluetooth TCU...see instructions below on how to pair...as well as the options you need to have installed as standard equipment:

Thanks overboost, I never would have found that!

Qsilver7: I will give that a try tomorrow, but there is one thing I don't understand. Under the "pairing procedures", what is instruction #1? What (or where) is position KL-R or KL-15? Am I missing something obvious or is my X ignorance showing?

Thanks again.

The transfer case fluid wear only keeps track of the mileage and puts out a code(not a warning to the dash) after going so many miles. You will only see the code if you read the VTG code memory but resetting will get rid of the code at restart the mileage counter. Transfer case adaptations are made automatically so really not much need for that AFAIK.

KL-R accessory position (1st click of ignition switch)
KL-15 ignition on (second click of ignition switch)
KL-50 starter command (3rd momentary position of ignition switch)

I can't say exactly what the VTG oil wear adaptation reset does but it certainly does more than simply clear/reset a distance counter. When you run the job in DIS, the transfer case does a whole bunch of whirring and buzzing, moving the clutches through their full range by the sounds of it. It does this several times, each time sound a little different.

It then prompts you to read the adaptation values and confirm that they have been zeroed (via a query to the VTG).

Everything I've read about this system also indicates that any wear code that is set is not only related to mileage travelled. Autologic state: -

"Oil Monitoring is performed by the VTG control module to determine when service is due. Service due is indicated by a Fault Code. Additional details are available using an advanced BMW scan tool. Service functions provide direction on changing the transfer case oil and updating the VTG control module with the necessary reset and adaption procedure, which is extremely important for condition based service (CBS).

The VTG calculated transfer case and clutch wear is based on amount of slip, torque, speed, mileage and can account for road conditions. Service intervals will vary based on individual vehicle use."

YMMV... ;)

Wow! Who came up with those? Must mean something in German... Thanks again, I assumed it was a position of the key switch but had no idea what or if it involved some other button too.

KL is the abbreviation for 'klemme' which is the German term for connector / connection. ;)

They are 2 seperate resets one is for the oil wear, the other is for the transfer case/clutch wear.

Earlier this evening I read all the codes stored in my X with my new Foxwell NT510. Unfortunately at this point I had little knowledge of what I was looking at... I did store it all however. I do remember seeing the term "VTG" also. I will see if I can connect to my laptop tomorrow and figure out what it is trying to tell me. The X had several stored codes, but only one that tripped the MIL. Apparently I have an oxygen sensor mis-behaving. Some of the others involved the pano roof, steering angle sensor, side marker bulbs etc. I'll sort it out tomorrow and bring back a concise report. Thanks to everyone.
