The OEM for the expansion tank is Modine, BTW.

This I can confirm as of just a few weeks ago having ordered the Modine part from FCP and receiving a "Genuine BMW scratch off" : )

FML, that's for sure... I found my local Advance Auto Parts had the Dorman in stock. I know it is made in Taiwan but it will get me out of the current stress mode I am facing. For $70, it came with ET, cap, sensor and transmission thermostat and in stock on a Sunday. I did order everything from FCP this morning (same components) but Genuine BMW. Cost was a little over $200 from them but it is the correct parts for the X. The Dorman kit is just to get me to Daytona tomorrow.

Here's what the current conditions are here in Charlotte (snow and ice). Even The X struggled for grip getting to the parts store. The DSC light was strobing like a Friday night rave in Ibiza... :bustingup

Yep, mine failed in Las Cruces, NM... just after leaving TX on the way to Vegas with my Mom. Was dragging her with me to a tennis tourney. She was less than pleased. LOL. I'm just glad I happened to glance at the cluster as she was driving and didn't notice the low coolant message. I saw the check arrows and had her pull over to display the message.

Anyway, all that was available locally at 5PM on a Thursday was a URO (I can't stand URO) tank back in TX in El Paso. Left the E53 at a decent gas station in NM and rented a camry to go back and get the part + smurf blood to replace. Was back on the road in about 4 hours total. I was extremely chuffed with this... but my mom less so. :)

That URO tank was installed 06/05/2016 and is still on the truck to this day. I have a spare Behr unit here ready to take its place when it decides to crack. Or when I do my cooling system over haul in the next few weeks. Have Logic7 lower temp thermostat, water pump, and a bunch of hoses ready to go in.

Just have to put the lower splash shield on but finished with no leaks. The Dorman is really made cheaply, especially the level sensor. I even had to file the upper hose fitting clip mount slots for the upper hose going to the tank . The locking clip just wouldn't seat properly. That said, its good for a few days until my FCP order comes in and I feel like doing it again. The ET came right off without a struggle at all. Just put and hand on top and on bottom and wiggled it and lifted. The transmission thermostat was broken, just like almost everyone discovers...

Well I made it to Daytona. I have to admit I was nervous leaving and headed on a 500 mile journey each way without even a test drive after the cooling system repair.

Leaving Charlotte was treacherous to say the least... I just hyper-focused on every sound and smell but after 9 hours and a 1 hour freeway backup, I guess it was a success.

The Dorman will last 1-2 years.

In the mean time, look at the link I posted earlier for Genuine expansion tank that is being sold by a BMW on ebay for $55 (they are trying to get rid of old stock). You may want to buy it at $55 and replace it later and leave the Dorman in the trunk as spare.

Thanks, I ordered Genuine BMW ET, hoses, trans thermostat, cap and level sensor from FCP Euro on Sunday. Just got an email that it shipped today. I just had to be at the track tomorrow here in Daytona for a Michelin tire test so I had no other option on a Sunday, the day before I left. I will be pulling all the Dorman stuff off when I get back home later this week...

Mishimoto used to make an m54 expansion tank that was all aluminum. The problem is: that tank won't fail, but something else in the chain will if you don't lower the abnormally high temp and pressure our systems run at to get that ULEV certification.

If everything in the system was metal, you would probably have to do hoses more frequently, but your tstat and expansion tank would not be the weakest links in the chain.

Run a pressure cap from an E30.
