Hi all,

I just purchased a 2004 X5 3.0. It has the MKIV navigation with a DVD update of around mid ‘14. That being said none of the buttons surrounding the navigation head unit work. I can’t eject a casset tape, change channels, change presets or anything. The screen generally stays on the menu after the splash logo. I can adjust radio volume and channels on the steering wheel, but it doesn’t change the screen during this. I can also scroll through the MPG/Stop Watch/Time/etc on the blinker (ticker) stock. If I hold that button down, it’ll revert to a menu to select those options, but then it reverts back to the other one shortly, and nothing can be reset. I did pull the circuit breakers, (even the one under the spare tire) but nothing seemed to help.

You may have one of two issues:

1. Your navigation monitor has an internal fault that is not allowing the button contacts to work. (no-fix)
2. Your navigation monitor has a LOOSE contact or misaligned pins (If the screen was ever replaced) that can cause the same as above. (easy fix)

I recently purchased the car and it wasn’t working. The previous owner did say that he had replaced the screen previously, but never mentioned that the buttons not working afterwards.

It looks like he replaced the screen back in 2013. I will say that I did remove the screen and open it up and pull both ribbon wires out and reinstall them. Before I pulled them out the right rotary knob was working and you could eject tapes. After I pulled them out and put them back in nothing worked.

There is a “hidden menu” or “engineering menu” give it a Google that allows you to test each button and dial. This will show you if the unit thinks that they are alive or not?

Most likely you damaged the ribbon cable(s) when you pull them out, or you didn't reinstall the ribbon cable(s) correctly. Or the PO damaged the cable when he tried to replace the screen.

Would it be correct to assume that one set of ribbon cables is for the LCD and the other set is for the buttons surrounding the LCD? Anyone know if there is a place that sells just the ribbon cables? I didn’t go quite as far in as the video showed so I may just do it again and reset the ribbon cables on both ends. The screen will sometimes sit on an all white screen and then randomly change back to the menu screen but generally stays on regular menu. The eject function used to work and drop the screen down (before my messing with it) but now it doesn’t do anything.

I googled this briefly but it seems that you have to have function of the buttons to access this menu. Unfortunately I can’t select or change anything and the nav unit stays stationary on the screen. I may have to contact that person and see what’s what.

Does anyone know if the Navigation screens are easily swappable without recoding the car? Should it be plug and play if I find another 16:9 Nav unit from another x5?

I replaced my screen (flat panel) only into my head unit. I bought a replacement from eBay. This was for the usual screen pixel damage that looks like torn cloth. There is a how to on you tube and it is fairly simple with patience and some good quality precision screwdrivers. I think (I may have dreamt this) there is one wire that requires soldering.

No recoding was required for that. I’m not sure about replacing the entire head unit?
