Airbag light, reset? Repair? Replace?
The light was on when I bought the X. No accident but it’s on. If I replace the module with a used one will it work or need to be coded to the car? Anyone tried “Myairbags.com” they claim to reset my module and turn off the light for $49. Any other options? Indy wants $1100 to replace the bag and modules. That ain’t gonna happen...
Many thanks for suggestions/input. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |
First buy either software or code reader that will read the SRS system and show the code as to why the light is on. I had a phantom AB light for a while that came and went as it pleased. No fault codes displayed; turned out to be a faulty ignition switch since replaced.
On another occasion my wife took the '01 in to have a window regulator replaced. The idiots switched the ignition on with an AB disconnected and tripped the light. They counted on my wife missing it and it was on when I checked the vehicle later. A quick check with my Peake and a reset rectified the problem. I now have a Foxwell 510 since we added a '13 Xdrive35I to the stable. The scanners pay for themselves in one or two "lights" be they engine or SRS or anything else related. |

Zulu95, I have an NT510 it tells me the code but I couldn’t remember what it was to put in my post.
Overboost, I look forward to being able to operate this software and stop bugging people here! When I have a chance I’ll read the code with the 510 and post it here. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |

I should have mentioned the passenger seat sensor apparently is bad. The belt has to be buckled all the time or the seat belt warning alerts.

You're not bugging us, that's what our forum is for. Answering questions to the best of our abilities for new X5 members. Here are some screenshots of the BMW Scanner 1.4 software. You can see all the sensors and faults and disable those you don't want until you can fix them. Keep in mind, disabling faults is not recommended, they are telling you that you are not safe in the event of a crash.

Wow. I had no idea software with that detail was available. I couldn’t do anything like this with my Benz. I guess it’s good I made the switch! I have one of the cables, not sure which one, the other should arrive this week.

Concur with OB that questions are what these forums should be about. I have saved a power of cash over the years thanks to direct answers I received or the results of searches.
Have you tried clearing the codes with the Foxwell to see if they come back? |

Yes, I tried to clear them but they come right back. The drivers side code is new, I hadn’t seen that one before. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Odd to have so many go bad at once. From that readout on the foxwell it looks like steering wheel and dash board bags are bad (or unplugged). And maybe the passenger door airbag? Not sure about stage 1 vs stage 2. Could it just be a fuse? If you find what you need, I have a parts truck with all the bags here.
|
I kept getting an air bag light for driver's side stage 1. Could clear it and it would last awhile then come back. The last time I cleared it I ran the SRS system test. The test goes through and identifies all of the pieces of the SRS system. It's been over a month now and I haven't had the light come back yet. It got to the point it was popping up every couple of days before. Don't know why, but it seems fixed (knock wood).

From what I learned from the PO, the light had been on for while, probably years. He thought it was a bad connection on the passenger bag. Either way, I want it off. I’ll figure out where exactly the problem is when I get the software up and running. I will definitely keep your parts truck in mind. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I had the same thing and it was my sensor pad on my passenger seat. Bought a bypass sensor and seatbelt emulator (bought as a kit on Amazon or ebay and was sent from Ireland). Easy install and works flawlessly. Airbag will still deploy but will regardess if someone is sitting there or not.

There is an implication that the light has to be reset with scan tool.

What if it's not the seat pad, it's instead a bad connection or a bad igniter. This won't still kill the light will it? Thanks again! |
The $15 part is the seat belt warning emulator. You may need the seat sensor bypass part as well. Small grey box with a couple of dip switches. Both work together as the seat thinks someone is always in it so the seat belt warning needs to be tricked. Also, many of these cars were covered under a recall. Mine was not far a strange reason but 90 percent were...check that out first.

UPDATE: No outstanding recalls. So I guess I look at the emulator and software to find/sort/fix my problem. Thanks again!:thumbup: |

If it's the sensor that's bad I'd just replace it.
Unless you want to stop by and give my ex-wife a ride to the nearest bridge abutment. [emoji38] Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk |
Yup,mine was doing the same. Was the seat pad sensor. Got the bypass module and it fixed it. May be under recall also depending on VIN.

Wife's sensor defective but works when it's warm. She gets an airbag light when it's below zero outside. Once cabin warms up we can restart the car and the airbag light clears. I've been considering getting the seat pad emulator didn't want to deal with the seatbelt also since it only happens when cold.
When I run a scan it sees a problem with the control module so it could be internal wiring. I get the internal error even when warm but it doesn't set off the dash light though. |
Same happened with mine until it broke completely. See if it is under the recall. Mine was not but most were. Emulator and seatbelt bypass work flawlessly, otherwise.

The cut off was like 2002. Wife and I both have 2001. Even with "safety device" there is a statute of limitations of sorts. The range was just a few years like 02-04 covered but pretty sure the bum lot of butt sensors went back to 2000 when wife's was made.

Get the emulator and seatbelt over ride, then. That sucks, though.

Problem is I don't know if it's the butt sensor or the module. I can swap with wife's sensor to see if the problem migrates to my car to confirm.
I also have a working butt sensor from my old passenger seat I don't know if I can extract it to move it over. I'm sure it's molded into the foam or something. The old seat is headed to the scrap heap so I think I'll cut it open to learn if nothing else. |

I think I might just pull the pad out of the old seat and plug it in. If the error goes away I'll know.
