Help Please - 2001 4.4 ABS Codes and SES Light
 

Hi Everyone and Happy New Year!


I am doing some work on a 2001 X5 4.4L and I'm getting some ABS codes along with the warning lights in the cluster - the beloved trifecta.


We have replaced all four ABS sensors in the wheel hub assemblies, but cant get these codes to go away (please see attached pics). Lately, the car is also throwing an SES light and the only error code is for VEHICLE SPEED, which suggests to me it's related to the ABS issue.


My suspect at the moment is the actual ABS module, but I'm also wondering if it might just be the pressure sensor that is on the ABS assembly.


Has anyone experienced something like this or have any thoughts or suggestions?

Watch your speed sensors realtime and see if you get incorrect wheel speeds.

The abs module has a design flaw that will cause a break in the electric path from the connector to the mother board. Cheapabs.com charges $150 to refurbish your unit so no recoding needed.

If you can reset errors and it works a bit and quickly malfunctions with multiple errors like both front sensors no speed etc it's likely the module.

If you have a compatible module they will do an exchange so you can have no downtime. (I'd you are USA / Canada).

Most of the threads I've followed with mystery abs Gremlins start with replacing a couple wheel modules and end with happy factor once the module is replaced.

Rather than use a similarly aged used from a junk yard I definitely recommend fixing. This guy apparently developed some improved method to attach the welded interconnects. Repair your actual module also means no programming required.
