4x4 - ABS - Brake Lights, all on?

Friends

4.8is 2006 Model.

These three lights all came on yesterday this coincided with the drivers side CV joint splitting and dumping all of its grease. The car was on a very steep hill trying to pull away in mud. It felt/feels like it is slipping drive somewhere?

When in cycle the ignition the lights go out but return again after a few minutes driving.

I keep seeing reference to the transfer case actuator gear stripping? Although this also refers to the X3

My plan is to get the CV joint replaced first. Then investigate the lights.

Has anybody any ideas here. Is it worth replacing the gear anyway. They do an updated gear on eBay for the X5 and it does refer to a fault with very similar symptoms to my own.

I plugged in my Scanner but it throws up so many errors it’s not much use right now. I have been told I need to change the drive shaft / CV joint first.

Thank you.

Bruce

If the CV stripped you won't be able to drive and youll get 4x4 /abs errors as one wheel won't turn the same speed.

It seems likely to be the gear in the transfer case. Easy to check, and the replacement gear is so cheap, buy one and have it on hand when you check the old gear. It saves going back in there later, although turning the gear over 180Deg can get you working again too.

P.S. get out of the car with the motor still running, then turn it off while listening under the car. You will hear the actuator cycle the gear end to end just after the ignition is turned off. If it's worn, it will make a noticeable clicking sound. It's normally just a a buzz-buzz sound - no clicking.
