Have you had a DME repaired?
 

Has anybody sent their DME off to have it repaired? If so, how did it work out for you? I have found a couple of places that say they can fix/rebuild them without the security VIN problems I have read about.

That place looks credible. Your DME will probably need the coil driver chip replaced (often proprietary or hard to get/cross) which is a different repair than the circuit board problems that ABS modules often have. This company seems to know what they are talking about, I would be worried about sending it off to a place that claims that they can do the repair and normally does only ABS modules. Assuming the coil driver is the problem, you should determine what caused it to fail before reinstalling the repaired DME.

You stated The DME does have a coil driver chip, this might be my problem with not getting a pulse to the Cyl #3 coil. Would there be a coil driver chip for each of the 6 cylinders?

I have not worked on BMW DME specifically but there will be a separate coil driver "circuit" for each coil but often 2 or more such circuits combined on a chip. Yes, that could explain why one coil is not being triggered. Sometimes the chip, or segment of the chip, can be zapped by a bad coil and sometimes it can get damaged by someone "testing."
