OBC keeps switching to metric
E53, ‘06 3.0i
Both displays switch from US units (miles, gallons, mm/dd date format, etc.) to metric units (km, liters, dd/mm format) without any input from me. I can restore the settings but they eventually revert to metric again. In addition, the fuel mileage computer recalculates every time the ignition is turned on, and the distance counter does too. This all started a couple months ago. Vehicle has 140,000 miles on it. Don’t know if this is a failed component or maybe just a bad connection somewhere. Any ideas on what I can do to fix these issues? Thanks! |
Some oil service reset tools will do this (my car is set in metric and it shifted show to US units). Other issue could be a failing battery, enough to start the car but a voltage drop at times that will cause a reset (I had this with my battery below a certain outside temp - it would reset the trip odometer).

Or leave it in metric.
The rest of the world is metric! |

If truly battery issue, then google "Exide L3" vs "Exide L5".
Exide battery is a good bang for the bucks. |
Right now my go to battery for x5's is the napa legend gold. Its a relabeled Deka Intimidator AGM which is one of the best batteries you can get in a normal agm type battery.

Thank you all for the quick responses. Guess I’d better get out there and do some battery diagnostics. I’ll report my findings when I have some!

My battery tested fine in any test but couldn't start the car after 8 minutes of hazard flashing. The battery could out out 550 CCA and start the car at 0°F. Some defect in the battery basically made it a 1AH battery vs 90AH. It held perfectly high voltage when charged, could put out full current to start but would die very quickly on modest use like a cell phone charger. |
