Glove Compartment Latch

Tonight when I got home, I took something out of the glove box and closed it, but the latch stayed out and it’s now jammed. It doesn’t feel broken, although it might be, it’s more like it stayed in the open position when I shut it and jammed. It is dark and 5 degrees, so I left it for now.

Has anyone had this happen, or do you know how to dismantle the latch from the outside and get it open? I’m hoping not to break it if it isn't already broken. I can get a better look at it tomorrow in the daylight. This is one latch on the car that I had not heard of breaking - unlike the door carriers, one of which I’m waiting for warmer weather to replace. I love and hate this car.:(

I’m open to any ideas.

Sounds more like something loose in the glove box (a glove perchance...?) has become jammed in the latch as you closed it.

Gonna to be a fun task - hopefully warmer temps and more light will aid sorting it.

Wife’s latxh got loose and it woikd either not open or not close on a whim.i was able to get it open by holding just the right way to force the latch to work (eg holding the latch base from moving while pulling on the latch). Once I got it open I just needed to tighten the screws.

Just for anyone that pulls this up later, I was able to fix the latch today. First I had to give the latch a fairly good smack from the outside to get it back into the closed, flat, position. Once it snapped into place, I was able to open the glove box. I could then see that the problem was that the two screws that hold the latch together were very loose. I tighten them, and the whole thing works fine now. I am going to pull them out and put a bit of blue loctite on them once it is above zero outside.

Exactly what happened to my wife's, but I was able to just twist and pull somehow: the smack is very helpful trick

Twisting and pulling wasn’t working for me. I was at the point where I was going to break something, so I tried the not to hard smack to get the latch back to the closed position. It went. After that it opened almost normally, but I could see the inner latch piece moving. For once it wasn’t an expensive fix. Very happy about that.

Now for my left rear door carrier installation. :-(

I have to repair my left ear DHC. I will likely remove the actuator to get to it.
