I looked at another post here on the forum, where there was one picture of the turbo, there was a little swirl vane, this I do not have on my turbo, is this important ...? :-)

X5 don't have them. Somebody mentioned that recently

Maybe you are thinking of the infamous "swirl flaps" in the intake manifold - this is NOT that. They look like this..

These horrible "swirl flaps" are rotating flaps are installed in many M47 and M57 diesel engines as part of emission control but were never fitted to the M57 and M57TU engines fitted to E53. Thank goodness.... as they are known to fail and be sucked into the engine... :yikes:

The swirl vane in the image from norway2's post (and from my car) is just to guide the intake air onto the turbo compressor. It is probably to reduce intake noise.

It not available separately but is part of the intake pipe (#13717795026)

If mine came with one, then it’s long gone! Perhaps if I ever get around to cleaning intercooler, I might find bits in there. :p

Assuming it all got through the turbo compressor! :yikes:

I was kidding about this going through the turbo compressor. Not that it could do so (as it most certainly could!) but that if yours was missing it may have done so.

If one of these (or any part of it) was sucked into the turbo compressor, it would probably cause severe damage to the compressor blades.

You'd certainly know about it... :(

If yours is missing it was mostly likely either never fitted or has been removed at some point. Possibly because it was damaged and as it is not available as a seperate part. If it was damaged it would be best to discard it rather than to risk turbo damage.

Haha, yeah it was missing before I replaced turbo anyway.. old turbo didn’t show any obvious signs of damage from ingesting anything. I’ll just call the missing part weight savings ;)
