Could not see the drip from inside the expansion tank just below the cap but could hear a whining sound (perhaps the aux pump?). Filled the coolent up to correct height for the measuring float. Still no drip (but perhaps I didn’t wait long enough). Started engine and looked down into the tank and I saw drips from just below the cap inside.

Thanks for the images. Trying to find out if my iCarsoft one will do the job. I have also heard of another port under the bonnet of my car so maybe I need to connect there with an adapter.

My aux pump also whined when it went out. Only reason I knew was that it showed up as a code when I ran a scan. Then I opened the cap and saw no stream of coolant like there should be. Replaced the pump and it's all good now.

I replace the heater control valves on the right side of the engine. They are clearly accessible and easily removed. 45 minute job at most. Took my E 53 from no heat to full heat! While I usually buy parts at Fcp for their lifetime warranty, this time I got it on eBay. Works great!

Thanks Fifty, that could be where the whining sound is coming from. I will need to listen more closely. I checked my odb2 and there were no fault codes.

See if you can find the activation or the live data for the aux pump: nt510 will activate the pump (really tricky to find the sub menu though)

2005 X5 E53 Still no cabin heat

Hi guys, Did the job today. Some of those water hoses were hard to get off. I have a bunch of photos I’ll post up. Anyway, replaced Aux water pump, Expansion tank and heater control valve. Result, still no cabin heat. Will run the bleed again tomorrow. Need to start investigating what else it could be.

You get the little stream of water from the side of the expansion tank opening?

What scanner are you using? I can monitor the temp of my heater cores and the heater valves.

Are you getting air but cold or no air? (Heater flap stuck) heat at floor not dash?

I replaced the aux pump and expansion tank first. I did see the stream of coolant when I did the bleed with engine not on. I didn’t wait too long and started the engine up to temp. No heat from vents. not air con cold but definately air blowing. So, then I replaced the heater control valve and did the bleed again with cap off (not sure if i had the bleed screw undone this time). Tried doing the bleed again later no stream of coolant from top of tank. Will try again later.

Did you read real time temp of goesin and goesout of the radiator? And core temp? Also what about the fake gauge on the dash? Does it hit noon in a reasonable time? Usually no heat means too much cooling from t-stat stuck open.

You can simulate closed t-stat with clamping top radiator hose shut with a quick clamp or the hose clamping pliers made for that.

I didn't see whether you checked your bowden cables behind the dash. They sometimes become disconnected and the flaps won't operate.

Thanks Andrew and Fifty. I put my hand on the hoses connected to the heater control valve and they all seem hot. But the one heading into the bulk head may be hot due to the closeness of the engine. I will check the other pipes soon. Not sure how to check the bowden cables. Maybe a torch through the in center dash vents. At least I have a bit of bmw coolant in the system now. Not a lot. Better than straight demineralised water I had before.
