Power steering pressure hose replacement E53

Found the pressure hose weeping on our 3.0 E53 X5. Have a replacement hose and now see Murphy's law is likely in effect to tackle this. Not sure how much I have to tear apart to get at the fittings and hoped someone could provide guidance from experience.

Google and searching this site didn't come up with anything so far.

Any help appreciated.

This guy did an E46 and looks to have the same hose connection locations as on an 3.0 E53. The 4.4 has a different power steering hose set up.

Yeah a Murphy's law project for sure...

Did my power steering hose. It wasn't too bad.

Same. Replaced all of mine. Took some twisting and contorting but got it done. Wasn’t too bad as I remember. 4.8is though. Not sure if same on others.

I scared myself watching the videos... once I found the right wrenches it went pretty easy.

Had to have the wife crawl under and move the hose around so I could get the banjo fitting to start threading using only one hand. Must have dropped the inside washer 6 times before we finally got it. First time for the wife to get under her car :D

Took pics of the process. I'll try and do a write up later this week.

Scare yourself because you thought that you needed to drink a couple of brewski before attacking this job, or to have a potty mouth?

Did you watch the video?

EODguy 03-17-2019 10:48 PM

Yes, but that video wasn't blowout it was one he had found showing the hose replacement. Unless you're saying that was him? :dunno:

Beer and cussin' I'm good with... thought I'd have to tear half the front of the car apart to get at those hose fittings like he did.

On Saturday it took me til noon to finish changes that were needed to be made on my taxes and submit them to our CPA. Only had a limited amount of time to change the hose before prepping my 4X4 for an offroad trip the following day (today) with my son. Good news is I finished the hose by 4:00p and finished changing the tires and gearing up the truck by 8:00p.

I'm happy to have got it done in a short amount of time. While under there, I saw some antifreeze dripping from the dampener pulley. Looks like I'll be ordering a new water pump now. What's next :dunno:

Do not use that video as a example of what it takes to do a X5 Power Steering hose replacement, as ours is simple and you have 3x as more room to work as the engine bays have 3.0 all the way to 4.8is engines stuffed in them. With the 3.0 you can actually dance around the engine as you work and besides the vehicle sits 8" higher off the ground!

On my 4.8is it took longer to set up and clean up then the actual R&R part.

Precisely! With the 3.0 this repair is so simple that I like to challenge myself to see if i can avoid spilling a SINGLE drop of ATF on the garage floor or my hands. it's not easy though, especially when you start dealing with the rez. i can get the hoses off the rack and tranny cooler with very little mess. But inevitably i'll sling some from the reservoir when moving it around :bustingup.

This weekend or evening depending on weather, I have to do a P/S pressure hose on a E39 wagon that makes the E53 look even more simple! Looks like a 1/2 hr job plus cleaning everything as I go. A clean car is a happy car....
