Can bus fault
Hi wounder if anyone can help me.
i have a bmw x5 2006 3.0d e53 will not come out of 3rd gear and will not start as ecu is thinking its in gear. i have got to its a can bus fault as i have 0.3 oms on a can bus wire on the ecu. i have started to disconnect modules to try and find the dead short but still there when i unplug this black cable next to the ecu i regain no dead short but do not know what this black cable dose. i am losing my hair with it now as i am now stuck and any help will be great full. thanks |
Firstly, the BMW TIS system will help you identify components, connectors and includes wiring diagrams...
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e53-x5-3.0d-sav/ Secondly, a fault like this is going to be nearly impossible to resolve without a decent software or hardware scanner - BMW's INPA, DIS or ISTA, PASoft BMWScanner 1.4 or one of the better aftermarket scanners such as a Foxwell etc. INPA will show you the gear lever selector position switch lines etc. but you can also trace them out and measure them with a multi-meter to confirm that the selector switch is operating correctly. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...switch/p6MqfsL The EGS connectors are large blue connectors in the e-box. The DDE (ECU) connector is a large black connector in the e-box. Thirdly, I don't think you can communicate directly with CANbus on the E53 chassis - while CANbus is used by several major modules (IKE, DDE, EGS, ABS etc.) it does not present on the diagnostic connector - only data translated to K-Line via the IKE is available on the diagnostics connector. If you truly have a CANbus issue, you'll need to fault find the CANbus fault using special tools on the CANbus lines themselves (mostly) although the BMW diagnostics will give you much information about module faults etc. There's some E53 specific CANbus fault finding info. here: - https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...an-bus/YRVreCj HTH... |
We are useing a 2018 snapon mashine.
I have had an auto electrician out and they was the one who found the short on the wire. On the ecu the wire is brown and yellow stripes i have unplugged all the modules on the newtwork bar the g force one which I can not find. On the dash we have no rev counter no PRND and will not start as fault code is p/n dose not match transmission position gear select P actual gear 3rd I will get a photo of the cable as on them pins are the dead short. |
Maybe your gear selector is out of whack. That is what usually happens. Never seen software mess up gear selection.

+1 to what SlickGT1 said.
Another thought is maybe one of the shift select cable mount points has come loose and there is slack in the cable, that will definitely screw up gear selection. Have you by chance traced the cable path from the shift lever to the trans to make sure it is mounted solid? |

Of course, the gear selector AND the CANbus could both be faulty.... |
