Passenger side wiper failure
Hello Gents,
My passenger wiper crapped out on me Tuesday, it moves only two inches on each wipe maneuver. Took it to my independent shop and the mechanic said I need a new wiper motor upon picking up the vehicle. How do you diagnose needing a new wiper motor vs just having to tightening the bolt that I have reading people mentioning in the threads here? I don't want to spend money unnecessary if I don't need to. Obviously, this would beneficial for the independent shop as he quoted me at $675 wiper motor, $150 wiper arm and $150 for labor. I asked him why he took off the wiper arm, he said it's not working and I need a new one. Something is not adding up.... Your insight is appreciated! |
If the left side is working but not the right it is probably a loose wiper arm or linkage related. Get out of that shop as soon as possible and maybe report them to the BBB. It sounds like they are trying to steal from you. The motor is a single arm that moves both wiper arms though linkage.

I agree with Overboost. If you look through the forums you’ll find a number of guys with that issue and it’s usually the linkage bolt has worked its way loose.
Sounds like your guys is hedging his price on worst case scenario hoping to make a few bucks off what’s likely a very simple fix. As Andrewwynn (I think it was) found out that arm is relatively pricey so he splinted his at the break and solved his problem for just a few bucks. If yours is just the bolt, that’s even “easier” to fix [emoji106] |
- Reseat the linkage arm.
- Add one drop of Red Loctite to the threads. - Tighten it snug, then turn a bit more. You can do it, this is using basic tool and Loctite, which you can find at any auto parts store. |
Fellas, thank you for the feedback. I feel a bit disappointed that the mechanic and shop owner could be that deceptive and was knowingly try to rip me off. Needless to say I will not be going back there.
Not sure why my wiper arm was removed. |
Auto repair industry is not regulated very much.
Finding a good and honest mechanic these days is similar to finding a good/honest doctor. It is difficult. This is why people should learn the basic of car maintenance to avoid ripoff. |

Not sure why my wiper arm was removed.[/QUOTE] Probably so he could tell you it was broken, charge you an arm and a leg, buy a new bolt for a few bucks and make a small fortune off you... sadly. |
- They removed the "wiper arm" so they can charge you an arm and leg.
- Pun intended lol... |
