[Solved] N62: CEF/Limp Problem after replacing Crankshaft sensor and Fuelpump
Hi,
Short story: A month ago i experianced a failure of my car (BMW X5 E53 4.4i / N62). The symptoms where hard starting, suddenly dies and will not take revs. We replaced the crankshaft sensor as the readings from diagnotics told us that the sensor was failed/not reading. That didnt solve the problem, and we found out it was a defect fuel pump. The pump did actually work but not under pressure, then it stopped. It was changed and the car ran perfectly. Atleast for a short while 5mins or so, then it failed with a CEF/Limp mode. The error codes was now: P0021 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2) P0300 Random Misfire Detected Code And they keep returning after some time, after Clearing. Especialy if you give it alot trottle then it comes on right away, properly because the timing will advance there alot. Now I have got my hands on a INPA diagnotic tester to try to diagnose a little futher and it shows that the Camshaft adaptions is out. http://download.phisk.net/X5/ECU_E53...ftAdaption.png Furthermore we now see the following errors as well: 2820 CDKDISA - Fehler DISA 2821 CDKDISAT - DISA Temperaturwarnschwelle Motorschutzmodell Is it posible to reset the Camshaft adaptions, as when i try Reset all adaptions it fails for the DME9.2 and there does not seem to be any individual reset for the camshaft as for eg. O2 or so. Any suggestings what could be the problem here? Best Regards Thomas |
It's this simply reporting that the vanos are not turning the cams to the requested position?
On my scanner I can display requested vs actual cam position. Find the equivalent page in INPA and see if vanos are moving appropriately. (they may not call the system vanos on M62 but I'm taking about the variable cam position gear including the solinoid that applies the engine oil pressure. This feels like a systemic problem like the oil pressure is too low for the vanos to do their job. |
Are you sure you didn’t just cross plug some stuff in. I can’t remember exactly, but people have cross plugged stuff in and made errors.
Inpa is snowing input bank 2 and output bank 1 to be out of range. |
That actually just recently happened. The intake and exhaust vanos plug were swapped leaving to very similar errors

Thank you very much for your feedback. I have now struggled with it for a couple of days.
And I have now tried to replace the crankshaft sensor back to the original one, changed before the fuel pump. The engine now runs like a charm again. So possible a wrong or bad Crankshaft sensor. Located on the Bottom under the starter. Thanks for your help. Best Regards Thomas |
Did you use Non OEM sensor? That is a very very sensitive sensor it had to be OEM even more sensitive than cam shaft sensor. It measures the changing speed of the crankshaft between pulses of the pistons to determine if a particular piston is misfiring.

They don't stock quality sensors at stores. For cam/crank sensor must order online or get from the dealer.
