Brake Pads
 

Hey Guys,

I had my X serviced today. Got a new driver's side front window regulator...no more big popping noise when my window goes up!! Had some hoses that were "dry rotted" replaced. They said it would be $550.00 to replace the fuel gauge to correct the reading error. Told my "service advisor" NEVERMIND...I'll deal with it!

Anyway, the real reason for the post is because they said I'm going to need front brake pads (and possibly rotors) soon. What do you guys recommend for no more brake dust?

I love my Axxis Deluxe. Did them myself. No problems. No dust! @ www.zeckhausen.com

Or you can go with PBR... at least I think it's PBR that Gary put on the X5... and on my M3 for that matter.

axxis deluxe are awesome - no dust - no noise - great stopping power . i also added some drilled rotors from tirerack . com great price and look great

i just don't brake anymore...

I did my rear brakes last night....Okay, actually I watched as a buddy did them. But I learned a lot...totally easy job...it's theft that dealers want 550-700 for the job. Total cost to me was 222 for parts and I gave my buddy $50 for the 'lesson'. :) Plus I got better rotors than OEM...I went w/ some Drilled Brembo's...they look great!

Hardest part was getting to the caliper pressure bolt to get it off....the shock is in the way..it took some time but we got it out.

Doing the brake flush and Coolant Flush tomorrow.

Michelle, I have Axxis Deluxe pads too and like everyone said they're amazing. No more brake dust so you don't have to clean your wheels as often. :)

I got the Axxis Ultimate pads, yes they dust, but they stop the X5 on a dime! Hayaku sold 'em to me...thinking he would not get a X5, and now he has a 4.4i again! :)

Axxis stuff is great. Then again, you can do what SG does and just not drive the X5 and keep it in the garage. Brake Dust problem solved!:rofl:

Did you guys replace the rotors? Is there any difficuty with remove the rotor off the hub? Is there 2 screws that hold the rotors and you have to use the impact tool to remove them?

I am in the process of getting my parts together to get all 4 wheels done. I am going to pay a friend of mine that is a certified mechanic to do it. I just bought some brembo drilled and slotted by stopchek and free shipping as well. Bought 2 of the break sensors, one for rear the other for front and will get some axis deluxe pad which everyone reccomend from the board. I will take some pics after its done. The rotors are like 240 for all 4 with free shipping. Hope this helps.

i got 2 choices to install my self or have a friend shop do it for $180
if i have it done by the shop it will be a total of $ 720.21
not bad, the dealer wanted $1,100 to do the job and keep in mind that this new rotors are better than the OEM........

so i saved a lots of money and have better breakes tham the OEM one

Why does everyone want cross-drilled rotors? Doesn't make sense for the street.

Things I've done that have proven to save my brakes, fuel consumption and consequently reduce brake dust: Drive efficiently:

-In stop and ago traffic, accelerate prudently so that you can coast longer to a stop.
-On the highway, leave ample room between you and the car in front of you so that you can slow down using just throttle-off.
-If there's a red light up ahead, throttle-off WELL in advance so that you can coast while the suckers on the road keep going and use the brakes at the end. Mean while, you will pass them when it turns green bc you were already moving.
-If there's a turn, hit the apex the best possible without endangering anyone: you can go faster through the corner; won't have to brake in the corner too much to adjust; will have maintained a higher speed through the turn, so you'll have to accelerate less when you're out to reach your desired speed.
-etc

-Remember that coasting is also good not just because you don't have to accelerate more later: your injectors are closed if you are off the throttle. When it gets under 1000 rpm or around that, they open again to maintain idle.

You get the idea, just drive strategically and efficiently. I owned my 92 Prelude for 2.5 years until this last monday and in that time I never changed any part of the brakes. This is too prevent even more brake dust over your Axxis pads :) .

Same with Big Brake kits. Absolutely no reason on the street. Heck, I'm sure stock BMW brakes do fine on the track for novices :tsk:.

great advice on breaking vinuneuro BUT

if u're a lady driver and u see a red light 100 yds ahead u're not gonna brake(or even take u're foot of the gas) UNTIL u're 10 yds from the light. This has the added effect of launching u're passengers head towards the windshield even when u're belted - my wife does this to me frequently - i'm suprised her pads last 10,000 miles.

alas if u have the axxis pads then u don't have to worry how she brakes.

I hear ya. It's horrible how some women drive.
