BMW X5 Le Mans Experimental Build

BMW X5 Le Mans Experimental - Only ONE Produced

Created in 2000.

This beast would make Dr. Frankenstein smile.

Its V-12 engine with 700 Brake Horsepower, was more powerful than the 24 Hour Le Mans winners of 1995 and 1999.

Why has anyone done this yet on an X5?

In other BMW forums.........people made:

E36 wagon powered via S50B32
E39 wagon Powered via S62B50
E91 wagon powered via S65B40/44

The donk (Australian slang for engine) maybe the issue perhaps.:dunno:

:D

I did do this, and it cost me thousands!

NEVER imitate Hans Stuck..

Unless, your bill fold can back it up!

Mine is bruised.

Very nice.

Looking from the car looks like they modified the front bumper, headlamp (pre-facelift), roof rail delete and retro-fitted side mirrors.

Rims are 20inch BMW Motorsport? Looks like a BBS e-88.

I assume it's using a e39 M5 instrument cluster and steering wheel.

Just can't figure out from what car are the side mirrors and door panel / trim?

There's a really good article about it from about 10 years ago somewhere out in the Bimmer ether. The mirrors rotate at the base like the M5 mirrors, but my faded memory from the article has me in E36 M3 land for some reason. :dunno:

I do recall that it was only RWD and literally nothing from the E53 was in the drivetrain.

mike325ci 08-18-2019 12:11 AM

Yes, it's RWD. There are 2 videos in this article. The one with Hans Stuck driving is in German, but turn up the volume because that X5 sounds wicked!!

Sure thing!

But really no one really dared to atleast clone it externally sans the motor!

Maybe to ricer for some taste.....

With E53's dirt cheap price now....something to think about!;)

I may have similar Rims and side mirror....just need to find which boxes in the shed.:D

I saw the car in person at Le Mans in 2000. It got a lot of attention in the paddock. That is probably when I first said I wanted an X5

That was something at that time but today 700HP is just getting in the door. E53 model is no longer a cost effective platform to start from. Best to start with a 2015 or newer X5M for a bunch of reasons.

None of those reasons include Heel & Toe.

TiAgX5 08-18-2019 02:34 PM

I found the X5 LM interesting when it was done, time marches on.

This BMW tickles my fancy now, the Gruppe5 2002.......

https://sportscar365.com/autos/riley...w-2002-reboot/

A 2002 with over 800 hp and full aero package is a hell of a thing. If I were to get some track time in one, plastic surgery would be required to remove the smile from my face.

If you're in to heel and toe there is no X5 or X5M that it is worth modding for HP/TQ.

You don't need the V12 at all because that BMW S70/2 is unobtainable. Try something really different and look for a wrecked E60 M5, E63 M6 Coupe, or E64 m6 Cabriolet.

Then take everything from the M5/M6 for a conversion in to an E53 X5. Make it RWD and call/email Awron GmbH for a custom wiring harness. They make them for any application that someone may want for an S85 V10 conversion. Now that would be an absolutely wicked X5.

That’s what RMS wanted to do to mine, S62 supercharged with a 6 speed gear box and RWD. I saw the price tag and nearly fell out!

Now a S85 would be boss!

deemo319 08-20-2019 04:20 PM

You nned to this man!!!! An S85 in an E53 X5 would be out of this world. Just get someone to build you a custom reverse-blistered hood similar the X5 Lemans but more organic looking.

True story. I stood next to the X5 LeMans at Amelia Island Concours two years ago. To be honest I was most likely looking very creepy because I was walking around it again, and again, and again trying to ascertain how I could "borrow" the carbon fiber engine cover and then escape the clutches of the Nassau County Sheriffs roaming about.

That thing is an absolute legend and even downright intimidating in the metal. V10 X5...

May have been a slightly different part of the circuit. Here's the press release from 2001....

On June 6 the world saw another motorsports record fall to BMW as Hans Stuck drove a specially-prepared V12-powered BMW X5 around the 20-kilometer (12.5-mile) northern loop of the legendary Nurburgring circuit in Nurburg, Germany, in a time of 7:49.92 minutes. The "X5 Le Mans" is an engineering exercise that originated among BMW engineers to explore and demonstrate the absolute limits of this type of vehicle beyond just theory.

The X5 Le Mans is powered by the same six-liter V12 engine that propelled the V12 LMR to its win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999. To break the eight-minute barrier is an accomplishment many thought was impossible with a sport activity vehicle - even for a driver the caliber of Hans Stuck. "We tried three times last year," said Stuck, "but had twice weather problems and one time a mechanical problem.

The target was to go below eight minutes on the northern loop of the famous old Nurburgring and last Wednesday we were lucky that the weather was good. Normally it is bad at the Nurburgring and good in the rest of Germany, but this time it was good up there and bad in the rest of the country. After going out in the morning and checking our settings my first flying lap in the afternoon was a 7:49.92.

People were totally crazy that I could go so fast as they did not think I could break the eight-minute barrier. The X5 reached 311 kilometers per hour (194 mph) on the straightaway. It was a ride on a cannonball!"
