2004 X5 Reverse Camera installation question....

So I still haven't gotten my deck fixed yet so unable to test things out but since I have all my panels and camera I figured I get all this mounted and wired in advance. Got a question on the camera RCA wire it has a red wire that comes off of it and wanted to know does one end of the rca cable go to the deck on the Eonon deck? And if so where does the other red wire on near the camera rca go? The camera also has another wire adapter which Im assuming is the power and ground.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

as for your back up camera i had pro do it i can ask him your question for you

and let you know

The extra red wire with the video RCA cable is the trigger wire, normally used to switch to the rear camera video on the head unit. You may or may not need this, depending on how the head unit switches to reverse camera view. Many head units (inc. the Eonon I think) can use the data signal from the iBus or CANBus signals to do this switching, rather than a physical wire.

You'll need to figure out the best way to do this with your particular head unit and camera setup.

I used the red wire attached to the RCA jack cable to power my backup cam from the head unit camera power source. I just grounded the camera at it's mount. I only needed to run the one RCA cable from front to back.

I haven't purchased the ibus as I wasn't sure if I was going with the eonon or not. But Im probably just going to get my GA8166 fixed since I have it and use that. So it should be the same setup as you. Could you see how the installer installed it. If I can just route the cable from the deck to the camera and call it a day rather than using the relay and reverse light switch Ill do that. Unless I need to do it that way if the picture quality is better Ill go that route.

I have a Eonon and I believe it comes with a canbus unit. Trying to figure out the best route, picture quality etc....

What headunit are you running? And if this is all I need to do would rather go that route so I don't have to run extra wires. How did you do your setup?

I've never messed with these cameras but I've long suspected that the trigger wire was just a loop feed from the power. The power wire receives power from the source (often the reverse lamp in any car without PWM lighting, so not in an e53...) and simply lops it back up the RCA to be th trigger wire for the head unit. Once the camera is powered up, it triggers the unit to switch to the incoming camera video.

In your case, you are "back-feeding " power to the camera - brilliant - esp. since you don't need a trigger.

Best install ever!

Back feeding? Explain?

Poor terminology on my part....

In a generic installation (in a generic car) as the trigger wire is connected to the power wire (inside the camera) - apply +Ve to the red power wire (from the reverse light etc.) and this will also apply +Ve to the trigger wire, to trigger the video display to switch to the camera video.

Since these wires are effectively in parallel, it seems it's possible to power the camera via the trigger wire (if it's not being use to trigger the display video switch). If you think of current flow using convention theory, the current to the camera is then being sent down the trigger wire in the reverse direction from the trigger current (not that the trigger would draw any current), in effect "back-feeding" the camera.

I should shut up now... ;)

Yeah no problem. The terminology "back feeding" made it sound like I had 2 sources of power to my rear camera. I am simply using the red wire attached along side the RCA cable to provide 12V from the head unit to the camera power wire as its source. I just grounded the camera ground wire in the back. No trigger wire needed with the Android aftermarket CAN bus adapter. It knows when reverse has been selected.

I power the rear cam all the time the car is on so I can record the rear image along with the front image as dash cam features. I can pull up and view front or rear live camera videos or browse through recorded videos at any time through the DVR app.
