Looking at BC coilovers, rear coilover or separate spring/shock?
 

Hey Guys, I'm finally done with the air ride on the 4.8is, and I am considering the BC coilovers for an affordable replacement.

Looking on their site, they offer two versions, one with a full coilover for the rear, and one with separate shock and spring for the rear. Both have the same front units, and both are adjustable.

Should I go with the original style of separate or the newer coilover one? Is there any advantages to one or the other? BC's site shows both will fit. For me, ride quality is more important than handling on this SUV, since it's doing family hauling duty now.

Subbed, as I’m curious as to what people say. I found a great deal on brand new BC Coilovers for half the price of retail and I couldn’t resist. I’ll be installing them on my 4.6 in the next week or so, along with new axles and subframe bushings. Unfortunately my TC is looking like it needs replacing as well :(. Anyways, if you don’t buy them before I’m done installing, I’ll let you know how they feel

Hi. I've just been through this on my 4.8is.

BC coilovers run at 90kn spring rates to the front and 120kn to the rear. It's a very skittish and firm ride and most people end up trying to put them on full soft settings.

They're great if you want to lower it/like a firm ride but from everything I've read and researched it's also a budget option.

I installed Eibach springs with Bilstein shocks. The Eibachs are 45kn and 60kn spring rates and it's still a firm ride (although I also have old run flats on it). Handles VERY well though and as I've said elsewhere, has surprised a few people with it's cornering speed.

It depends on the type of driver you are, whether you want to lower it etc and even the kind of roads you use. For mine, a firm ride would drive me nuts on some of the roads I've driven on in Dallas and LA so that's up to you.

A few other members here have had success with a suncore? product that is closer to the original ride feel. Do a search here in the forum.

I installed BC coils on my E53 recently. Went with the full coilover set up in the rear. I didn't even know there was a separate spring and shock set up available from BC.

I put them on with whatever settings they were set at straight out of the box. Ride feels stiffer for sure, but that is going to happen no matter what if you are lowering your car. It depends how sensitive you are to bumps, but personally for me, it was an overall minor difference in harshness/bumpiness. Mainly only noticeable on much harder/shaper bumps.

+1 on the Eibach springs here. Taut/controlled but never harsh. They are a slight, and I mean slight, step up from stock sport springs. Inexpensive, too.
