Poor radio reception

So I have poor radio reception on a lot of channels that sound fine in my E60.

This isn't a new issue, just one I am finally getting around to.

Any ideas?

Depending on your model/year/engine/radio spec, there is a powered antenna amp in the rear - maybe the fuse has gone?

EODguy 09-02-2019 10:28 PM

I tried looking and can't find the post (operator headspace and timing on my part) but I am pretty sure there was a posting about RF interference dealing with the GPS or key fob antenna getting bleed over that could be an issue also. I would hope this jogs somebody's memory and they can help you you out.[emoji1696]

I think the post was that the rear window demister interfered with reception (when it is switched on) - only fix was to replace rear hatch glass… :(

That does sound like what I was thinking, well crap! I am obviously getting dementia [emoji1787]

If dementia is defined as having a befuddled brain after reading thousands of posts from folk having problems with their E53 - then we BOTH have it!

Befuddled? [emoji856] I glad I can still remember that word and how to spell it..[emoji28][emoji6]

I believe a failing diversity amp can affect radio reception, though not positive.

Does the rear window grid work in anyway with the key fob? Perhaps as an antenna? How could RF interfere when the car is off? I think my fob range has degraded & it’s not the battery in the key... looking forward to hearing back. thanks guys.

It may be caused by your occupational hazards. :nanana:

Oh, sure.... Use C4 as chewing gum one time and now I'm supposed to think it's bad?[emoji1787][emoji28]

I have a 2006 X5.

I will check fuse, but some stations come in fine.

Probably not demister since it is a constant issue

wpoll 09-03-2019 04:53 PM

Fuse F86 in the trunk...

Sae85409 09-04-2019 11:33 AM

All fuses in rear are good.

I had a similar situation and it was due to the power wire to the antenna booster not being fully seated. I had some work done that required removing it.

Any pictures/diagrams of this antenna? I believe the diagrams on realoem are of e39 touring & of no use.

AM, FM or both? The AM reception on mine has always been weak. It was getting worse so I pulled the antenna cable off and sprayed the connections with electrical contact cleaner then plugged it back in making sure it was fully on. The reception improved quite a bit.

I have the defogger problem with the FM reception. When FM is on and I turn on the rear defogger it kills the FM reception.

Sae85409 09-06-2019 12:32 PM

FM only, now issue with defogger(as I rarely use it). Granted I only listen to ESPN on AM.

Where is the antenna cable?

wpoll 09-06-2019 03:46 PM

Inside of trunk lid, at the top...

I believe that’s the diversity amplifier. I checked mine & it seemed air tight. I couldn’t pull the connectors off as they were rather small & I felt like I would break them. Perhaps I will disconnect the antenna & spray some deoxit inside the connection. The tabs on that top trim piece love to break off FYI, so if anyone is going after it be careful!!

wpoll 09-06-2019 05:06 PM

Exactly - and if this diversity amp looses power, the recption goes to hell... ;-)

Check for power at this amp - if none it could be a broken wire in the hatch hinge loom - not uncommon.

The antenna cable I pulled and cleaned was where it actually connects to the radio. In the trunk, under the spare, under the spare carrier, under the cover under the spare carrier.

wpoll 09-06-2019 06:10 PM

My radio receiver is in the dash, so it varies a bit! ;-)

It won't - BMW forced the site to be taken down. :(
