Front subframe replacement
I'm looking for tips and tricks for replacing the front subframe on a 2001 e53 w/3.0L.
I have searched, but the most relevant threads I've found are related to motor mount replacement. It looks like 1. supporting the motor/trans 2. removing the wheels 3. compressing the front suspension 4, unbolting engine/trans mounts 5. unbolting the old subframe 6. reverse Replacement subframe arrives saturday. Any other parts I should consider replacing? |
I don't think you need to worry about compressing the front suspension.
Also, supporting motor should be done from top of the engine. adding to the list, unbolting control arms unbolting steering rack |

You do need to support the motor from the top (lifting bar across fenders) Remove the stiffening plate. Unbolt the control arms and tension struts from the subframe. Unbolt the motor mount brackets from the motor mounts Do something with the steering rack - either unbolt it from the subframe and suspend it from the engine, or pop the tie rod arms and disconnect the ps hoses and drop the subframe with the steering rack still attached. Undo the 6 bolts and drop the subframe No need to compress the suspension |
