Immobilizer issue
Decided to do a Transmission oil filter service this weekend. Dropped the pan replaced the filter and filled. When I went to start the engine, the dash doesn't show the car in park, and the car won't start. Moving through the gears has no effect. I pulled the gear position sensor and the continuity seems fine. When I fire up INPA, it shows questions marks and zero for the gear position and it doesn't show any codes.
Is it possible I caused an issue when I dropped the pan? What am I missing, what should I look at next? 2001 X5 4.4 with the ZF5HP24 Tranny |
Immobilizer issue
That's the symptom of dirty connector plug on the back of the transmission. Mine actually said I was in gear 54 once.
If you broke a wire off inside would have the same effect. Check the external connector first then you'd have to take off the pan to check inside. Theoretical a wire could have gotten pinched and shorted to ground |
So apparently I cut some wires on the gear position sensor causing the TCM to flake out. One new (to me!) TCM later and we're back in business!!! Maybe I should take the time to make sure all the wires are good before buttoning up the tranny pan. Thanks for the help Andrewwynn and all the others on the forum. I found a older post that nailed my symptoms exactly that led me to the TCM.

I would look at the readings for gear position before putting the bottom on the tranny.
