2006 E53 DRL change to LEDs

Hi guys, i have a very nice X5 but I hate my DRL’s incandescent daytime running lights. I would love to change them to led bulbs anyone know the proper bulb size? And any info or recommendations? Thanks so much!!!

Not sure that will work. I think the voltage for the DRL high beams are 5V hence the dimmed brightness. H7 is what you want but most LED bulbs are set for 12V.

After 8 years with my E53 (pre-facelift) it went to the next owner, so no longer in Switzerland but in Finland. I replaced it with an E91 330 xd and also want to do the LED thing for my angel eyes. All of the bulbs are 12 V, you need to look at your headlight cluster to be 100% certain.

In my case it is an H8. For an angel eye, you want 120 W (effective) per bulb (60 W is a a bit dim) and those who are made to be error code free. You also (angel eye) want the "stick" part of have the small LED's all round the stick (usually at 90 or 120 degrees depending on the factory that made them) rather than left / right.

These are on my 2006, they come with a lifetime warranty and are plug and play, if your talking about the DRL angel eyes.

OP should provide some clarity on what he needs. From the factory, E53 X5 only uses dimmed high beams as DRL (daytime running lights). The halos or angel eyes are not DRL since they have to have the light switch activated at least in the park position to be on. DRL is on with nothing more than the ignition switch.

Maybe I misunderstood when he mentioned DRL.

On my 2006, they don't have any day time running lights. The angel eyes come on when the head lights are one, later models I believe the angel eyes stayed on and acted as day time running lights.

Overboost gave me a great lead on better LED angel eyes on one of my posts, better than what's in my car now. I found out the DRL's I linked were installed on mine before I bought it and ECS sells as there's.

This is a simple matter of coding for DRLs on any E53. They would operate as OB explained. AE's never worked as a factory option for DRLs for the E53, but I have coded them on mine as DRLs. I like this look a lot.

What, you mean you didn't have to do any wiring, just coding them made your AE's as DRL? Please clarify as that would be earth-shaking in the E53 world ;).

Android infotainment system with the iBus adapter and app. As easy as selecting halos as DRL. I have mine setup the same way. I also have triple blink turn signals and cornering lights programmed through the iBus app.

I'm in shock - I just did a triple take :D. And I actually have the iBus adapter and app :D. But my head unit is Dynavin N6. I'm trying very hard to get rid of it and get an Android system.

Thanks so much for clarifying .. double high Five from me .

By the way, do the halos turn on with the key in? Does the app provide more customization of the halos?

The halos don't come on the moment you turn on the key. The head unit needs to start and the iBus app needs to send the K-Bus messages to light the halos but they are on in less than 5 seconds from turning on the key.

Same with the automatic folding of the mirrors. They can fold in the moment you turn off the key but they will only fold out after the head unit can start and the iBus app can send the messages for them to open. A little too much delay for me so I left that feature off.

There is a lot the app and adapter can do, but you need the Android open source system to add the app. That's the one thing that drove me away from Dynavin was the closed source operating system based off the old now extinct Windows CE system.

Best advise from those on here would be looking into the Avin Avant-4 system. That's the one I have and in all my reading and research, nothing but praise for this unit from anyone that has installed one and they are priced right starting at around $300.

There is some of them for sale with integrated chip so should work for him, I have had same on my previous E53, works fine, no errors on the dash :dunno:

May I ask how You coded AE to DRL? With NCS Expert? If it was NCS, then what lines needed to be changed in LCM?

Thanks!

The app is the iBus app from Rolf Resler. The Avin harness is already wired for the iBus adapter and is simply plugging it in and loading the app. Make sure you ordered the iBus adapter from Avin or you can get the adapter and/or app from the iBus app website. Avin also has the app and help files on their website.

https://www.ibus-app.de/index_en.html

Let us know how the install goes and I'm sure you will be happy.

Not possible Harry. As mentioned above, you need to activate the AE as DRL through the iBus adapter and app through an Android head unit.

Thanks for reply!

I have been reading forums for a while, so I hoped that NCS would do it somehow, just I have not fount a way. But seems that I have to get an Android system and some more cool features with it :D

I was curious about reprogramming my DRLs but I do not see "halos" as an option in iBus. My DRL menu options are Front Park Lights, Fog Lights, Rear Park Lights, and Ambient Lights. Perhaps my 2005 does not have halogens so that is why? Am I stuck with original high beam DRLs?

It's front "park lights".

Why "crazy Germans"? The front park lights in an E53 are of the "halo" design... ;)

Perhaps you meant "precise Germans"?
