Removable Cats

What do you guys think about cutting out the catalytic converters on a ‘06 E53 4.4i and then reinstalling them with exhaust clamps in order to have (relatively) easier access to the cats for cleaning, replacing, examining, etc? In short you would just be adding clamps to make them removable.

I have seen plenty of videos and articles where they do just that, although it’s to install a cat on straight pipes. Just wondering if you guys thought this might be a good idea on existing cats. Thanks!

I dont see why it couldnt be done, but why go through all the trouble? Not being a killjoy, it's just I havent had the need or desire to examine the inside of the cats on any vehicle ever.

Is there any particular reason you need easy access to your cats?

There isn’t a pressing need, I suppose I’m paranoid that they need cleaning and are producing back pressure, and perhaps robbing the car of some acceleration, etc. I do have about 117k miles on it and wonder if it needs a good cleaning or not. The bottom line is, I’m not sure and wanted better opinions such as yours I’m sure! Thanks for replying.

No prob! Also, o2 sensors would tell you your cats are in bad shape long before you would feel anything, if you are worried about that.
