Cat/Exhaust manifold different for California?
Greetings All, I may need a new cat on cyl 1-3 for my 2009 (build 11/02) E53/M54. The part number I have is 18407514498 from REALOEM. When I search for this on the aftermarket I sometimes get "Excludes California" and sometimes I don't, depending on the supplier. I do not see why a single part number would have 2 specifications, so I think the "Excludes California" is incorrect. I am imperfect, however, so would much like to hear your thoughts. Thank you in advance.

I think it is a CA emissions regulation that limits the sale of aftermarket catalytic converters. This from the CARB website:
"..Aftermarket catalytic converters must be exempted from California's anti-tampering laws in order to be legally sold and installed in the state. If an aftermarket catalytic converter is shown to be durable and meets vehicle emission control requirements, it is granted an exemption Executive Order (EO) that allows it to be installed on specific emission controlled vehicles...." |
@effduration Much thanks. I suspect you are correct. I will find a cat/manifold that doesn't exclude California though I think performance will be same, but longevity may not.

Everything is different in California, we insist on being a pain in the butt for the world
