Transmission Flush

I was wondering if I can take my X5 to a local mechanic and have them run a transmission flush through a machine? Would it hurt anything. I got 50k and just want to do some preventive maintenance.

sure.. nothing wrong with that. just make sure they do use the correct replacement oil and torque all the plugs back to spec when done.

Flushing using the macine will ruin the trans. oil filter. Make sure they replace it after the flush.

DON'T DO IT!, DON'T DO IT!, DON'T DO IT!

Your risking a high $$$$$ transmission. R&R the fluid only. The transmission fluid is VERY specific as to it's frictional characteristics. I doubt your mechanic will flush with the OEM fluid @ $25+ per quart and using anything else will contaminate the transmission.

Again, DON'T DO IT!, DON'T DO IT!, DON'T DO IT!

LOL

this is a good point... if its the wrong oil, your tranny is fubar... but if they do have the correct oil and you have a competent mechanic (ie no knuckle dragging grease monkey) then you are fine... (same goes for the filter)

So are we trying to save a few dollars is that it? If your not going to the dealer then why not at least have someone who specializes in BMW repair do this work? Somehow taking my X to someone who has to look for the oil filter would make me nervous.

If its a competent mechanic and you use BMWs recommended transmission oil, then you should be ok.
Insist on Bmws oil or buy it yourself at the dealer and make sure that this is the oil that the mecanic uses!
