Shuddering Transmission.

03 e53 4.4 with the 5hp transmission.

It happens at low rpms in any gear. Anyone know why? Dirty filter?

Thanks,

Brian

Are you sure? I get a shudder on wife's car under power. I'm pretty sure it's CV axle.

Thanks, yeah, low rpm but under power. So it’s just when lightly pressing the gas peddle after getting up to speed. It’s like it can’t decide which gear to be in. I replaced the cvs last winter. And actually just reset one that popped out. Along with a new transfer case (has 111,000 miles) and front driveshaft.

No change in shudder tho. I suspect trans filter for some reason... just curious if anyone has resolved that problem before.

One possibility - it’s common for the torque converter lock-up clutch friction plate to wear and this allows torsional vibrations to develop in the driveline. Sounds a bit like driving over a cattle grid. If that is the issue, you can usually see the engine speed wavering (you need to look very closely at the rev counter needle as it’s only by a couple of hundred rpm) in sympathy with the noise.

Shuddering Transmission.

In my case the shudder is only under a fair application of power eg going up an on ramp.

The symptoms above (low power request, gear hunting), sounds a lot like the lock up plate grab/slip.

I can monitor input/output shaft speed with foxwell and would make it pretty obvious if the lock up plate isn't.
