Opinions on a 4Runner (4th gen)

I am contemplating on adding a 4th gen Toyota 4Runner to my stable for my off-road stuff.

I wanted to get insight as to how the ride (comfort) and handling are, compared to an E53(Mine is a 3.0 with sport package).

If any of you drive or have had a 4th gen T4R, much appreciated on any advice.

I have not had a frame suv before, so not quite sure how it will handle or ride.

We sold a 2005 low mileage V8 TOY two years ago and bought an E70. The TOY broke the transfer box at 55K miles. $4K repair. It was my wire's vehicle and she hated it. Much happier in the E70 and she preferred the old E53 over the TOY!

Thanks for the input.

Unfortunate it broke at such as low mileage.

I was under the impression these cars were unbeatable in terms of reliability but I guess there is always an exception.

Not much experience with 4th gens but my 2nd and 3rd gens were indestructible. For Off-road use sure, but everyday use on the road, won’t have the same feel as an e53. HUGE Toyota fan here, get a 5 speed 3rd gen! :)

My neighbor had one for 16 years before trading it in for a 2016 4Runner. Don't have a 4Runner but do have the Sienna minivan. Compare with the X5 most trouble free car we ever own.

My son has a Gen 3 and his bride has a Gen 4. They're somewhat akin to comparing an E53 to an E70. The newer one is bigger and more refined, while the older is simpler and more truck-like. The Gen 3 is what goes camping and 4-wheeling in the mountains.

Solid as a rock....all generations. Resell value unbelievably high even when 10 years old.

Thank you guys for the info!

I may end up getting my hand on a V6 4th gen (auto).
They hold the value so well so I may just go for it and sell it if it does not suit my taste.

I use an X5 for offroading too.

I have 2 street driven X5's and a 3rd for offroad. They do fine at it from my uses. Just slap some aggressive tires on it and have fun.

I wouldn't rock crawl with it but it plows thru mud and snow just fine for me at least.

What was the question? I feel asleep when I saw Toyota. :)
