Stealer informs me today that my Rear Axle Boots are leaking fluid and corroding the axles. In order to fix I need both rear Axle Assemblys and the parts alone run for $493 +tax for each side.

Any tips on where I can get the parts cheaper? (2001 X5 3.0 - 80K miles)

As I posted before nothing is covered under my CPO warranty at Open Road BMW in Edison, NJ, I don't even know why I bought this car I want to drive it through the dealership door - I should leased a new one and stayed away from this CPO crap.

As for the brakes, I wouldn't expect them to be covered anyway so I was considering DIY install of Axxis Deluxe Pads and Brembo OEM rotors - $212 including shipping for the front set...good deal? recommended?

Please supply what fault symptom you have regarding the axle boot problem and I will try to advise if the correction measure/expense is valid.

The Axle boot pan is leaking fluid and as a result i need to replace what is called the "output shaft" aka the axle assembly - 493 for each side in the rear - thats exactly what the dealer told me

"Axle boot pan" even considering different terminology between US and UK is meaningless. The output shafts on the rear axle have joints that are sealed with rubber boots to keep the lubricating grease inside the joints and to exclude dirt and water ingress into the joint. If the rubber was to either split due to ageing or external damage then replacement would certainly be advised. The grease that would leak out of the joint cannot possibly cause corossion to any adjacent parts. If you can get part numbers of the parts the Dealer is advising replacement then it would certainly clarify what is happening.

Seriously, get another stealer! That just really sucks, and it seems like they want replenish their savings account every time you walk in with a problem. $212 for the brake pads and rotors is a good deal, that's what I got mine for and they're great. Have you looked at the joints? Can you see any corrosion yourself? Let's say you replace only the boots, are these a difficult DIY job? I noticed a couple small cracks on one of mine when I was doing my brakes and I don't really want to go to the stealer to have a new one put on if it's easily done alone. Seriously man, I wish you the best of luck - sounds like a tough time, and a dealership looking to make some extra money doesn't help.
