Sure, you can build your own tool if you have time and desire.

Or go to ebay and search "bmw water pump tool", you will see the same tool sold for anywhere between $9.99-$14.99 with free shipping.

Or just use a big monkey wrench and give it a good hit with a rubber mallet. Haven't met a fan clutch that didn't work on yet (with the belt on obviously).

Trust me....I had no desire to make my own....just couldnt get a tool here before Friday and wanted to work on the car over the Holiday. 17 bucks on Amazon is worth it to me.

While I agree knowing how to take the intake off is a necessity (and I do). I have a hard time replacing a bad CCV for another CCV that is destined to die. VW and BWM both went with overly complicated crankcase ventilation systems in the late 90s/early 00s and abandoned them for more robust systems (M56).

Of course now I'm scared that when I remove the OFH that the bolts will take the threads with them....but thats life and I'll deal with it if it happens (Saturday/Sunday). With the airbox out of the way I can clearly see that the OFH is the culprit....whats funny is my 2001 Z3 (3.0) with 100K still doesnt leak and has a functioning CCV.

Hopefully I get to the Yard Saturday and find a M56 valve cover (otherwise I'm going with a standard PCV). They have a 3.0 X5 there....wonder if I should grab any parts off it while I'm there (looks like a front end hit).

Thanks for all the advice....now just need to get all the parts/tools in a row to get this done before tackling the rear suspension

- The OFH bolts, crack it slightly first and listen for anything strange.
Most people strip the bolts during installation, so go easy.
Tricks in forum.

- The CCV. No need for M56 valve cover.
Do the "BavarianE39 CCV Mod" as posted in forum, you will be happy.

Got the OFH off.....So I'm pretty sure it was leaking....as was a hose to the power steering resivoir and the Vanos line. Should be in good shape to button her back up tomorrow.

Excellent advice to torque the bolts up slowly over time. Went to 10ftlbs in a cross pattern and she started to snug up nicely. Then 16ftlbs with no issue (and antisieze)

The old gasket didnt look torn, was completely flat. Waiting till tomorrow to get a torque meter to see just how accurate my torque wrench from Harbor Freight really is. Then I'll double check to final torque.

The FCP kit included both copper and aluminum washers for the Vanos line. I put copper ones in as thats what I'm most familiar with....any issue there?
