I'm behind you on this idea for sure. That stubby extractor set looks very promising. Prob worth paying for the experience to have the shop break those two plugs free. Put some anti seize on the new ones perhaps, not sure how to make sure you don't get any inside though |
Ok,
I am a guy that write a whole bunch of DIYs about changing fluids etc. in Volvos BMWs bc this is good maintenance. However, I also know people who go to 200K on stock fluid and only change the MT fluid at clutch job. So replacing MT is a "bonus", not an absolute necessity like changing engine oil. So relax, walk away from this issue for now. Make a note of this issue in your maintenance file records. Come back and address this issue when: 1. You are so bored and have nothing to do. 2. You replace the clutch. Don't get carried away. The risks of messing with the stripped bolt outweigh the benefits... |
Very sound advice.

Pipe nipple extractors for less than 10 worked for a stubborn 5HP19 fill plug for me. if you want to give it another try. |

That is why I am paying a shop to deal with it. |

Update.
Took it to the shop today The pro first hammered an 8mm hex into the hole. Tight fit, so the hammer he used was like a round metal rock. (It was a smart thing I stopped and left him enough meat in the hex hole) He then pulled on it with his long ratchet but did not try to force it. I noticed he used short gentle tugs like a human impact wrench. It was about feel, and he felt like it was not going to break free. He made sure not to strip it further, and went to plan B. Next, the pro first tried to chisel it and walk it free. That did not work. He then got out the Oxy and heated the fill plug area. Note, Oxy does not make metal red hot. After that, he returned to the ratchet, and the plug was free very easily. The heat really seemed to do the trick. We changed the 6MT fluid with exactly 2 Q's of redline MTL. I also had 2 new plugs to use. Charged me $40. Paid him $60. Great shop. |
Well done. Always a good feeling when you get a problem resolved and move on. Fresh oil in the gearbox is certainly a bonus!

Great feedback on the add heat.
