finally got my car back from the transmission shop today. it seems the original p1793 fault has gone but a new one has appeared. 4F6A (EGS Temperature sensor fault).multi plug and connectors and ground were ok. battery test was ok. suspect problem with mechatronics. I have a spare zf6hp26 transmission I can swap out the whole mechatronics so my next question is how do I code the new mechatronics to my existing ecu. have been searching for this but don't really know how to locate what I`m looking for.

Sounds like broken wire to the thermistor to me. I would figure out the pin out and measure the resistance. If it’s open as expected take off the pan remove the harness and see if you can determine if the fault is in the wire or internal to the sensor.

Stay positive. I've had a couple major scares that turned out to be pretty mild.

Recently I had a 5 month recurring SES that just said fuel trim error bit the long and short fuel trims looked perfectly fine.

One of my friends who is a mechanic thought he heard and exhaust leak under the hood so I was blaming thst and just resetting the SES regularly.

Until about two weeks ago when I read the code and it was *different*.

It said the heater wasn't working on O2 pre cat bank1.

Coincidentally I had to replace precat bank 2 last spring when it failed (under warranty). I bought them as a pair so when they replaced I got a PAIR. So I had a spart. Bank 1 pre cat is about the easiest repair possible on M54. Don't have to remove anything other than possibly the acoustic cover (I wouldn't know mine hasn't been on my engine in years).

So: I think that was a bad batch of O2, the replacement is working great and no SES since.

My shoet term trims went from 6, 11 percent to 2,3 and long terms for the first time in over a year match the polarity of short term and are like .04 and .08 msec.

Good luck let us know what happens
