Incidentally, I just had to look it up, and it turns out the spelling is 'giubo' and not 'guibo', the inventor being Giunti Boschi. Wonder if we'll ever see that one on Jeopardy. |

e39 touring is correct:
"The front driveshaft splines were not greased from the factory and can be fused into the transfer case. You can't move the front differential enough to remove the driveshaft. You need to separate the transfer case from the transmission." Drop the front half of the rear driveshaft, slide the transfer case back, then you can remove the front driveshaft. Clean up the splines and closely inspect both the driveshaft and the hub in the transfer case. If there is no visible rounding off of the spline teeth, then your safe to reassemble making sure to pack the joint with plenty of water resistant (think marine grade) grease. 2002 X5 3.0 370,500 miles (driveshaft and TC replaced at 136,000) 2014 428i 65,200 miles 2004 325i sold at 123,600 miles 2001 325i sold at 66,000 miles 1970 Firebird under restoration |
While you're down there don't forget to move the AC evaporator drain which BMW was nice enough to install directly over that ungreased driveshaft/transfer case location.

Ooooops. I stand corrected. I was referencing the front section of the rear. I’ve never had the pleasure of messing with the front shaft. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |
