White Nav Screen - Sometimes

Hi -

I'm a new member and recently picked up a 2002 with nav. It has 3 black dots on the screen, but that's not as much as a concern as the screen is sometimes all white. Other times its OK and works fine. Any ideas on what to check? The radio works fin with the steering wheel controls when the screen is white.

Im very handy with automobiles and will open a module or radio to solder connections or replace components.

Thanks in advance!

The 3 doors l dots will require screen replacement. The white screen is most likely the ribbon cable going from the screen to the unit. Very common.

I wouldn't bother trying to replace the screen. I did that, but the viewing angle is wrong. It is correct for a nav screen mounted lower on the dash like a 5 series. All the sellers advertise their screens as compatible with the e53. Technically, they are. You can install them and they work. The problem is you have to lean forward to be able to clearly see what's on the screen. So, they really aren't compatible. I haven't been able to find anyone selling screens with the correct viewing angle.

That was the final push I needed to get an aftermarket head unit. Some of the best money I've spent on my X. I installed an Avin Avant unit. It works well, ships from California and has good, responsive support. I highly recommend it.

^ :iagree:

That's the"best" way to fix the problem. but it is more $$$ and more work.

Avin Avant Installation

Has anyone done this and has a post? I read you have to run a new harness through the car and the audio "may" work.

Yes, tons of info about the retrofit in various threads here. I have a complete YouTube video on it as well as an install thread somewhere. Can send a PDF too as photo bucket probably too the pics down.

I've done it. It took some time, but overall not a terribly difficult job. Lots of Youtube stuff for the install. Be sure to get the IBUS app. It will allow you to keep the OB info on your screen along with a bunch of other neat features.
