2005 E53 digital tv reception

Hi Guys
I don't think I live in a poor reception area but I am having problems with reception in the X5. I can sit on my driveway and watch any channel I like as long as I have the tailgate open, close it down and everything disappears , no channels at all!! Anyone else experienced this, is it just a reception problem??

There is a big wiring loom goes through the rubber boot on the right side. Wires in their power the radio amplifier on the tailgate for the key remote IIRC. If there is circuitry for the TV in there it can be powered through the same loom.
