Keys (noob question)
Hi all,
Recently broke the barrell on the door of my 02 X5 (UK Version) and am looking at getting a new key for the remote locking. If I grab this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3BUTTON-R...72.m2749.l2649 and put in my current transponder chip (little black rectangle loose in the current key) then go through the remote locking programming (on to run, off, hold unlock and hit lock 3 times) Would this remove the requirement to have the 'key' programmed? I'm assuming the actual programming would be for the transponder to start the car? Sorry for the newbie question I'm just getting used to the new ride! TIA Nathan |
Is you current key a factory key? If so, it doesn't contain a transponder chip that can be relocated to a new key - the transponder chip is part of the internal circuit board (part G below).
https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/at...1&d=1361869694 Because of this, you are not likely to be able to simply buy a cheap key and get it going. There ARE ways to make this work but it requires advanced programming of the EWS system in your car. If your current key is already a cheap copy key, then this programming may have already been done and you may be able to do as you suggest.... :dunno: |
Like mentioned above, the black chip went away before 02.
It's a very tricky process to pair a key not one person in a hundred will pull it off. I will just order a factory key and pay the price to get it. Then I can open my current key and replace the wonky switches and re flow the solder (which I did on both my keys originally to get the remote function working). You can buy an eBay key and pair with ews to use as a remote fob it just won't start the car unless you also have the original key close enough to the ignition key to green light EWS |
It looks like my current key is already a copy, as it definitely has a removable / loose transponder chip (the little black plastic one) and there are no BMW logo's on the key.
Hopefully, can just take the chip from that, drop it in the new key and everything will just work. If not, as you say I can get the remote locking working and just use my current key to start and drive. |
If you somehow have an old school let with the ews chip than it should work. However I thought they were a different frequency so I think more likely it will start the car but not work as remote (so same problem as now)
