Raiding 4.Xis and e70s for upgrades?

Hey yall!

I am looking to start upgrading various pieces of my 2001 E53 X5 4.4 with sensible upgrades from the later models, and would love suggestions.

What areas should I focus on specifically? On the radar right now is the following at least:

1 E70 X5/6 M big brake upgrade. This seems sensible plus using OEM parts, read up on the thread on that. These appear to be just fronts though?
https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...o-upgrade.html

2 Aluminium style actual running boards. I am digging into replacing running boards and wheel arches with the real board style, not just the plastic trim I have now.

What else? I am used to raiding future or ///M models for tasteful upgrades, and looking to do the same here.

Thanks!

Hi Stefan,
Everyone has a different view on personalizing their E53 so the upgrades are dependent on individual tastes and budgets. I love the look of the E53 in 4.8 trim so that's the direction I went. Front and rear bumpers, flared wheel arches, style 87 wheels and exhaust tips. Everything else has been maintenance, full suspension rebuild and the Avin infotainment systems but I know you have that one covered.

I appreciate the info.. been raiding F8Xs for my F32, and now finally turned my eyes to the X5. Brakes are on the 8-12 month radar, so looking at where upgrades at the same time might tie together, plus anything else. Looking to maintain, refresh and upgrade the X5. She is in stellar shape and folks can't believe she is an 01, but still looking to tweak around the edges where I can.

I just did the BBK on my E46 and would love to see some nice calipers and big rotors behind my X5 wheels but the cost outweighs my desires. The stopping power of the stock brakes on the X5 are already amazing, they just don't look amazing. ;)

I will watch your thread of your BBK process and look forward to seeing what you do.

Hi.

You can actually install the more modern seats (eg from F series) into the E53. I've seen it done and there is a company that does the harness adapting so that you get the functions working.

Not sure if I'd spend that sort of money on that but saw pics of a complete 'show car' E53 (4.8is style) done out like that with what I think were F30 X5M seats.

Cheers

Let me ask you something. You do realize the 4.6is in the model year contained the largest and most powerful brakes on any BMW model offered for sale ?
Do you know how much performance benefit you will gain from spending thousands on brakes ? Do you even know the performance numbers - to justify the benefits ? VS upgrading to the best tires you can afford. And does the cost justify the modifications ? Im just curious.

Great feedback and looking at options. If the IS model parts are good, they are likely easier and cheaper to aquire all things said.

Main goal is looking at possible upgrades, while doing other work. If I am going to replace rotors and pads (and brake lines probably too) anyway, might as well look at the whole set. If there a reasonable upgrade to do while doing the rest, specifically for the brakes.

the other question is going to be, are the 4.Xis models any different? Scouring RealOEM, I see the same images (not surprising) but definitely different part numbers.

4.4 default appears to be single pot fronts.

4.Xis show the same image but appear to be 2 pot

I also read a rotor difference
4.6is
Front Rotors: 356mm x 36
Back Rotors: 324mm x 20

4.4
Front rotors: 332 x 30
Back rotors: 324 x 12

Yes. Different brakes on 4.8/6 vs 4.4's. Definite upgrade.

I am thinking a full set from an IS model, or rear calipers from the IS, and the big brake fronts from the E70 X5 M would be awesome.
