Can anyone help???

Hi all
Just come outta the garage after having a new steering rack fitted as the old was on its way out im still getting the steering wheel wooble between 60-80mph!!!!
Bits that have been done so far
News discs and pads Pagid ones
Control Arms both sides
Lower control arms both sides
Tie rod ends both sides
Wheels balanced by a proper machine
Brand new tyres on front
Wheels checked for buckles or cracks
New steering rack today as the old one was clicking and clonking
Tracking done
Put a different set of front wheels on from a newer x5 and no different
Checked the callipers both sides nothing seizing or seized and not getting hot
Drive shafts both sides have been done today to no avail
Can some one please help
What else is there left to replace on the car to stop this wobble
Any help much appreciated

Steering shaft U-joints? Is there a rubber bushing in the steering shaft somewhere? I also have a wobble at 60-80mph while cold. Goes away almost completely once I've been driving for a bit. You've done pretty much everything.

What X5 are we talking about here? You done the upper strut mounts?

Frank3188 03-24-2020 03:09 PM

I’ve got a bmw e53 3.0d not sure but Ive had the steering rack done
Upper strut mounts?? Thanks for a reply

crystalworks 03-24-2020 03:42 PM

Do the 3.0d's have 4 corner air? If not, the upper strut mount is part #1 in the diagram at the link. But there are other dampers in the assembly as well. No idea if any of them might be responsible for a shimmy though.

Are your wheels standard? You mentioned putting later model X5 wheels on. Did you use (do you use) hub-centric rings? If not, then you can get shimmy at high speed, as the wheels are not centred no the hub correctly without hub-centric rings.

Not put different wheels on it they are original ones from new

What front control arms did you use and did you preload them properly when you installed them?

Frank3188 03-24-2020 04:23 PM

Hi overboost
No the control arms some one else did about 5 months ago they were quite cheap ones also! But would hat cause this wobble? I thought when they went wrong they pulled left and right?
Thanks for helping

I would guess these are your problem. I would recommend Genuine BMW but there are Lemforder and Meyle for less. Make sure you have the X5 sitting at ride height when you tighten the mounting bolts. Tightening them in the air will cause the bushings to twist when lowered, causing premature wear.

Or you can go Poly on the bushings. Lifetime warranty from Powerflex.

Ok so u reckon this would deffo be maybe the cause of all this even after everything I’ve changed?
I’ve done so far
Discs and pads
Steering rack
Tie rod ends inner and outer
Drive shafts both sides
Lower control arms both sides
Tracking done
Wheels balanced and checked for buckles
Brand new tyres on the front
Callipers checked both sides
Car doesn’t stop wobbling whilst braking
Only happens the second I hit 60mph
Right thru till 80 mph then kinda stops wobbling but not as bad

Yes, there is a rubber bushing on the shaft under the dash. It is what you disconnect to get the SAS out.

Hah! My memory is shot. Did my sas last year and have no memory of a rubber bushing in there. :D

Good call on the CA Joe. I forget there are extremely cheap versions out there. Need to stop assuming people don't buy cheap suspension parts from eBay and Amazon. Usually previous owners.

Frank are the rest of the components you replaced of good quality?

Frank3188 03-24-2020 05:06 PM

Yes crystal works all of good quality all done by garage but the control arms was done very cheaply when I first brought the car

Overboost 03-24-2020 05:09 PM

OP, an easy test is get up to the 65 to 75 mph wobble and if getting off the freeway, jump on the binders and see if the wobble is worse. If those bushings are weak, the wobble will increase.

Frank3188 03-24-2020 05:10 PM

I’ve tried that but wobble remains the same whilst applying the brakes

Need a little more than applying the brakes. Jump on them hard, nearly to the point of lockup and ABS intervention. Put the stress on those bushings.

Frank3188 03-24-2020 05:46 PM

Yes it goes over to left side on harsh breaking
Is a track control arm or
A lower track control arm
There’s 2 tyres on eBay?
Thanks
Frank

Since tyres were mentioned, are they four identical tyres with similar wear?

Are they unidirectional? Had a tire shop mount my M5 throwing stars the wrong way, but they had the directional tire correct. When I pointed out that they had it mounted in the wrong direction they took me around my BMW and pointed out that the direction of the tire were correct. I took them around and pointed out that two of the wheel was mounted backward. If they mount the wheel correctly the tire direction will be wrong. Boy was he piss when he had to unmount the two tires swap the tires and rebalance them. BMW the ultimate headache machine.

But throwing stars... worth the trouble. :D
